Manchester United miss out on Champions League spot ? in Twitter Premier League

Twitter Premier League sees Man United miss Champions League spot

It may surprise a few to hear Manchester United are out of the reckoning for a Champions League place this season, but before supporters start lambasting David Moyes for a dismal transfer window, this is in the ?Twitter Premier League?, rather than the real thing.

Cardiff City fan and social media aficionado Andrew Isidoro has created a league table based on the Twitter followings of England?s top-flight clubs.

ODDBALLS: Chris Coleman misses Wales flight after losing passport

The top and bottom of the pile may not be too dissimilar to the ?official? version played out every weekend but Manchester United, who only set up a Twitter account earlier this year, may regret not jumping on the bandwagon sooner, with their feed languishing in fifth place ? behind local rivals Manchester City.

Arsenal top the Twitter table with a staggering 2,741,610 followers, while London neighbours Chelsea are just behind, ahead of Liverpool, the two Manchester sides and ? Gunners fans will be pleased to see they?ve beaten Spurs twice inside a week ? Tottenham.

Propping up the table are Premier League new boys Hull City, with just 51,453 followers, while Crystal Palace and Cardiff make up the remainder of the ?relegation places?.

Meanwhile Swansea appear streets ahead of their south Wales neighbours ? some things aren?t so dissimilar to real life.

Corporations do more to put art on public display

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) ? Corporate art buying in North American has fallen off since the boom days of the 1970s and 1980s but even as the economy improves, some companies are buying less art but doing more to put their works out for the public to enjoy.

There are about 1,500 corporations in the world with art collections, with some of the largest held by banks and financial institutions, according to the International Directory of Corporate Art Collections.

Shirley Reiff Howarth, the editor of the directory, said that since 2000, the percentage of collections listed as "ongoing," or still being added to, has dropped from 55 percent to about 40 percent. Many corporations are limiting new purchases for new buildings, expansions or renovations.

"While the volume of buying has been reduced, educational programs have increased and the collections are used for more than simply enhancing the walls of the company and its image," Howarth said.

Bank of America, with over 30,000 artworks created from several mergers, has one of the largest collections in North America. Instead of buying new art, it focuses on the arts programs it has created, including Art In Our Communities, which has loaned fully curated exhibitions to 60 museums worldwide since 2008.

"This is something that resonates with the communities where we loan the exhibitions," said Allen Blevins, who oversees the bank's collection and art programs.

The Charlotte, N.C.-based company currently has 16 traveling exhibitions, representing 2,500 works. Among them is a show at the Museo del Novecento in Milan of Andy Warhol's most important silkscreen portfolios.

"The level of appreciation has become more about education," Howarth said.

At Johnson & Johnson's sprawling I.M. Pei-designed headquarters in New Brunswick, there are two galleries that feature continuous exhibitions, one for special and touring shows and the other for New Jersey artists. They are open to the public by appointment.

Like other corporations, the medical and pharmaceutical giant also lends its artworks. A drawing by Alice Aycock was featured in a retrospective of the artist at a Long Island museum and a George Segal sculpture was included in a major traveling exhibition.

It has also presented other programs based on employee or community interest, including a show on New Jersey actor, opera star and civil rights activist Paul Robeson that traveled to several U.S. cities.

At Neiman Marcus, one of the few luxury retailers to boast an art collection, the art-appreciation concept is extended to its customers by turning all 42 of its stores into galleries.

At its Paramus, N.J., store, a Roy Lichtenstein screenprint decorates the men's department and a whimsical display by glass sculptor Dale Chihuly dominates its store windows.

The retailer has about 3,500 pieces in its collection, which was started in 1951 with the commission of Alexander Calder's large-scale mobile "Mariposa," now on display at its Chicago store.

Neiman Marcus' in-house curator Julie Krosnick said the idea from the beginning was to give customers "something that is culturally stimulating and thought-provoking, something that is not about buying and selling merchandise."

On a recent shopping trip to the Paramus store, Esther Seiger of Monsey, N.Y., said, "You see all this pretty art and it puts you in a buying mood."

Justin Timberlake: Fan Favorite in London

Posted Wednesday September 4, 2013 8:30 AM GMT

Making the most of his time across the pond, Justin Timberlake showed up at Magic Radio Studios in London this morning (September 4).

The ?Like I Love You? singer donned a black fedora with a grey and white button-up top and black trousers as he stopped to sign autographs before heading inside for an interview.

Last night, Justin attended the 2013 GQ Men of the Year Awards at the Royal Opera House, working his mojo in a snazzy black tuxedo.

Meanwhile, it sounds like Timberlake has been busy as an executive producer as of late- he tweeted, ?New trailer for a documentary I exec produced called THE SHORT GAME(out 9/20) just hit @iTunes?check it out!?

South Korea?s KNOC to sell Canada?s Harvest Operations: report

State-owned Korea National Oil Corporation (KNOC) plans to sell Harvest Operations Corp, its wholly-owned Canada-based subsidiary, a South Korean newspaper cited its CEO as saying on Thursday.

KNOC chief executive Suh Moon-kyu told reporters the state-run oil company had decided to sell Harvest, with three or four parties having shown interest, Maeil Business Newspaper reported.

KNOC bought the Canadian oil and gas trust for US$1.7-billion in 2009. Harvest reported a net loss of $720-milliondollars in 2012.

A KNOC spokesman said it was considering measures including the sale of Harvest to improve KNOC?s financial conditions, although the details of any sale had not been decided.

Federal Jury Orders Motorola Mobility To Pay Microsoft $14.5 Million In Patent Case

court-rulingA federal jury has found Motorola Mobility failed to license standard patents at a reasonable rate and ordered the Google-owned handset maker to pay Microsoft about $14.5 million in damages. This is the second of two federal court decisions determining that the royalties Motorola Mobility charges for "standard-essential" patents used in Microsoft products, including Xbox consoles, are too high.

Did Ancient Earth-Chilling Meteor Crash Near Canada?

A meteor or comet impact near Quebec heaved a rain of hot melted rock along North America's Atlantic Coast about 12,900 years ago, a new study claims.

Scientists have traced the geochemical signature of the BB-sized spherules that rained down back to their source, the 1.5-billion-year-old Quebecia terrane in northeastern Canada near the Gulf of Saint Lawrence. At the time of the impact, the region was covered by a continental ice sheet, like Antarctica and Greenland are today.

"We have provided evidence for an impact on top of the ice sheet," said study co-author Mukul Sharma, a geochemist at Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H. The results were published today (Sept. 2) in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Younger Dryas?

The new research shakes up a controversial theory about a big climate shift called the Younger Dryas, when Earth abruptly swung into a glacial period 12,900 years ago. The cooling has been attributed to a sudden shutdown in Northern Atlantic Ocean currents, caused by a big glacial lake flood out the St. Lawrence or Mackenzie Rivers. But in 2007, scientists suggested that comet or meteor impacts or atmospheric fireballs triggered the Younger Dryas, though no crater of the right age has ever been found.

The tiny particles from New Jersey and Pennsylvania, analyzed by Sharma and his colleagues, have never been accurately dated, Sharma admits. They could be several thousands years older than the widespread glacial event. "We are assuming they are Younger Dryas, but [dating] is one of the things that should be done better," Sharma told LiveScience.

And geochemical tracers in the molten rock show it can't be traced back to a recently discovered impact crater near Quebec called Corossal crater, thought to be Younger Dryas-age. [When Space Attacks: The 6 Craziest Meteor Impacts]

The researchers also proved that spherules from sites in North America and Europe, thought to be evidence of Younger Dryas comet impacts, didn't come from outer space. Sharma and his colleagues measured osmium isotopes in the melted rock and their surrounding sediment. Meteorites usually carry much more osmium than Earth rocks. (Isotopes are versions of elements with different numbers of neutrons.) But none of the spherules were extraterrestrial, Sharma said.

"Clearly these things were produced in an impact fireball, but we didn't find any evidence of meteorites," Sharma told LiveScience.

Yet Sharma remains convinced that the spherules from the Northeast Atlantic sites link up to the Younger Dryas cooling. "We have for the first time narrowed down the region where a Younger Dryas impact did take place, even though we have not yet found its crater," he said.

'Fringe science'

Scientists on the other side of the impact theory debate are not so sure.

"At this point, the pro-impact literature is fringe science being promoted by a single journal," said Nicholas Pinter, a geologist at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, who was not involved in the PNAS research.

Sharma's osmium isotope analysis of Younger Dryas sediments supports studies that show high concentrations of iridium (a meteorite impact marker) in Younger Dryas layers are erroneous, said Gregory Ravizza, a geologist at the University of Hawaii, also not involved in the research. Osmium and iridium concentrations tend to track each other ? both will be high at the same spot, Ravizza said, casting doubt on Sharma's conclusions.

Two deaths, six new MERS virus cases in Saudi: WHO

Eight new cases of the deadly coronavirus MERS, a SARS-like infection, have been registered in Saudi Arabia, the World Health Organisation said on Wednesday.

Of the eight, two men from the capital Riyadh had died, the WHO said. Both had underlying medical conditions.

Three women and three men, all from Riyadh or the southern region of Asir, have also contracted the virus, which affects the respiratory system.

In addition, a 38-year-old man who had been suffering from a lung infection died, the Saudi health ministry announced earlier Wednesday.

Saudi Arabia is the country worst hit by MERS, which has killed 49 people globally. A total of 102 cases have been registered.

Experts are struggling to understand MERS -- Middle East Respiratory Syndrome -- for which there is still no vaccine and which has an extremely high fatality rate of more than 51 percent.

It is considered a cousin of the SARS virus that erupted in Asia in 2003 and infected 8,273 people, nine percent of whom died.

Like SARS, MERS is thought to have jumped from animals to humans, and it shares the former's flu-like symptoms -- but differs by also causing kidney failure.

According to research published this month in the American health journal Emerging Infectious Diseases, MERS was transmitted to humans from bats. But a study in the Lancet found that the virus could have come from camels.

Rep. Griffin questions Exxon leaders on Mayflower oil spill

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - It could take several more months for Exxon officials to determine why the Pegasus Pipeline was cracked before it ruptured in Mayflower.

Company representatives met with local leaders and the media Monday to take questions and concerns about their investigation into the massive oil spill that shook the small central Arkansas town in March.

Original reports from the company indicated it would take about six months to find the cause of the cracks, but that timeline has been extended to a year.

"I ask for continued patience as we have the best minds in our company and around the country working on the investigation," said Vice President of Operations Karen Tyrone. Tyrone was joined by two other Exxon officials at the statehouse in Little Rock.

U.S. Rep. Tim Griffin was vocal about getting answers from the company, who maintains they followed federal guidelines in inspecting the pipeline before the rupture. Griffin asked about whether Exxon goes above and beyond minimum requirements in vulnerable areas such as the Maumelle watershed.

"I wanna know who's the one that says 'You know one test is enough on this because that's all that's required' versus 'We need to spend a little extra on this 13.7 miles'," he demanded.

For every existent building in your city, there are a dozen that never came to be. Some plans were abandoned for good reasons (see: LA's 5,000-foot skyscraper), others were abandoned because of legal and financial quandaries. Either way, these forgotten drawings show us what we could've had.

Value Of Herpes Testing Los Angeles - Health and Fitness

By Lauren G. Laurence

The price of herpes testing Los Angeles or STD tests varies widely and depends to a large extent on what, if any, insurance coverage you have and where you have the testing done. If you are fortunate enough to have thorough health insurance, you will probably pay only a small copayment, if anything, for each test. For the uninsured, STD testing through your family doctor can be quite expensive, ranging from around $50 to $200 per test. For those who seek absolute anonymity and don't care to discuss such matters with the family doctor, there are private testing companies, but their services do not come cheap, and few, if any, accept health insurance. These private firms typically charge $50 to $150 per test, but some offer testing packages that cover between seven and ten different STDs and are priced at $300 to $400.

Sexually transmitted diseases, or STDs, include a wide array of conditions, quite a few relatively mild and others a lot more dangerous. However, all of them must be addressed promptly. The one thing that many STDs have in common is the absence of symptoms, at least in the early stages of infection. So if you are sexually active and have had unprotected or even protected sex with one or more partners, you must be checked for the full range of STDs to ensure that you are disease-free and will pose no threat to your sexual partners.

Because there are so many STDs, there is no single test that can confirm that you are free of sexually transmitted infections. Testing procedures consist of blood tests, urinalysis as well as physical examination of your genitals and/or anus. Tests include taking samples of tissue, cells, saliva as well as abnormal discharges for microscopic inspection. Almost none of these tests is done with a routine physical, so if you are concerned about the possibility of an STD, you must ask your doctor to authorize the necessary tests.

In case you really need to get tested and do not have insurance or the money to cover for these tests out of pocket, consider local health clinics, most of which offer free or greatly discounted testing. University students can sometimes get free or low-cost STD tests through their college infirmary. Both Planned Parenthood as well as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provide referral services that will help you find a low-cost testing center.

Having access to herpes testing Los Angeles is an important safety issue. Among the features of their testing that they most delight in is that all tests are 100% discreet. When you visit herpes testing Los Angeles you can be sure a physician is always involved. All their tests include doctors' order and their nursing staff recommend where you can seek more advice and counselling in the eventuality of a positive result. Their "peace of mind" packages are great combinations for general exposure screening. Additionally, they offer individual tests for specific concerns. The process is easy. You can either order the test online or give their nurse's a call. They could walk you through the transaction and answer any questions. Once you make your order you can go to one of the convenient labs in Los Angeles. In fact, you could go on the same day as you make your order.

60 Minutes slammed on Facebook for misspelling 'Harvey' Bay

Topics:? 60 minutes, hervey bay, humpback whales, mistake, tv, whale watching

TV SHOW 60 Minutes has copped brickbats on Facebook for misspelling 'Harvey' Bay on a graphic during its story about humpback whales in Hervey Bay.

But the Channel 9 current affairs program also received bouquets on its story which shone a spotlight on the work of conservationists Wally and Trish Franklin and the Oceania Project.

Many expressed anger about the misspelling, with one comment from Donna Wynne-Markham on the post reading: "It's Hervey, not Harvey. Good story but disappointed you got the name of the place incorrect".

Her comment attracted eight likes.

Others?wrote that seeing the humpback whales in Hervey Bay was now on their bucket list, with Marlene Simmons commenting: "Booking my trip to Hervey Bay right now".

Mr Franklin said he was thrilled to see how the segment had turned out and, although?the filming process had been intense, ultimately it was worth it.

"It was very special - it turned out great," he said.

"It's very pleasing to see people taking such a great interest in whales and their conservation and protection."

Mr Franklin said that since the program aired on Sunday night, he and Trish had been inundated with emails from people?wanting to go whale watching in Hervey Bay.

"It's ... a unique place to see the whales," he said.

Mr Franklin said he had noticed the error in the graphic misspelling Hervey Bay, but he said he wasn't too concerned.

"All in all I think they did a fantastic job," he said.

Tourism Fraser Coast acting general manager Robbie Cornelius said the publicity value of the 60 Minutes story would be worth more than $750,000.

Pay off college debt ahead of your retirement?

student loans

Don TaylorDear Retirement Adviser,
My husband is 67 years old and nearing retirement, while I am a few years younger. I have about $26,000 in student loans, with monthly loan payments of $335. My husband has the money saved to pay off this loan. Should we pay it off or put the money into our investment account as we now move closer to my husband's retirement?

Thanks,
-- Jill Juncture

Dear Jill,
I understand the desire to make some adjustments before your husband's retirement.

The answer to your question depends on whether you are able to utilize the student loan interest deduction on your tax return, on the interest charged on student loans and how you would invest.

If you expect more after-tax earnings on your investments than you pay after-tax on your student loans, then you'd be better off to invest. The risk is that unless you're investing in certificates of deposit, you don't know your exact future investment returns. You do know how much interest you would be saving by prepaying the student loans.

If you face a variety of interest rates on the loans, you could decide to prepay the higher-interest-rate loans while keeping the lower-interest-rate loans outstanding. Any money you save can go into the investment account over time, at least until your husband retires.

Final Fantasy XIV Guide ? Changing to Different Jobs - Which one will you pick?

Final Fantasy XIV - A Realm Reborn

In Final Fantasy XIV, players will have an opportunity to switch into different jobs after mastering their main class. Each of the classes that are available yields to specific jobs that you can pick after meeting certain conditions.

One of the best things about Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is that you can be anything you want. Since you can switch into different classes at one point to another, it?s possible for you to master every job available in the game, although you will be spending a lot of time in leveling them up. Unlike other MMOs that lock you into one particular ?job? or ?advanced class?, Final Fantasy XIV will be flexible enough to meet your needs.

Below is the list of jobs that you can choose and some information about them.

Paladin

Final Fantasy XIV - Paladin Job

The Paladin comes from the lines of the Gladiator class. Players who will pick to become a Paladin will have to protect people in a group, which pretty much makes them a tank. As with all tanks in every MMO, it is the Paladin?s job to get the aggro as it mitigates the damage they receive. The most important stat of the Paladin is Vitality, since this one increases their HP and having high health makes them live longer in battle.

How to Change: To switch from the Gladiator class to a Paladin, you must have the following levels for a particular class:
- Gladiator (Level 30)
- Conjurer (Level 15)

Monk

Final Fantasy XIV - Monk Job

The Monk comes from the lines of the Pugilist class. Those who prefer to focus on brute strength and want to deal a high amount of damage output, Monk is one of the DPS jobs that you can pick. Being a Monk, players will be using the power of wind and/or the elements to deal a massive amount of damage to enemies. The main stat players should focus in raising is strength, since the Monk will be needing a lot of power.

How to Change: To switch from the Pugilist class to a Monk, you must have the following levels for a particular class:
- Monk (Level 30)
- Pugilist (Level 15)

Syrian troops find chemical agents in tunnels used by rebels: state TV

By Oliver Holmes

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syrian state television said soldiers found chemical materials on Saturday in tunnels that had been used by rebels, rejecting blame for a nerve gas attack that killed hundreds this week and heightened Western calls for foreign intervention.

The United States said it was realigning naval forces in the Mediterranean to give President Barack Obama the option for an armed strike on Syria and a senior U.N. official arrived in Damascus to seek access for inspectors to the gas attack site.

Syrian opposition accounts that between 500 and well over 1,000 civilians were killed by gas in munitions fired by pro-government forces, and video footage of victims' bodies, have stoked demands abroad for a robust, U.S.-led response after 2-1/2 years of international inaction on Syria's conflict.

In an attempt to strengthen the government's denials of responsibility for the chemical assault in Damascus's embattled suburbs, Syrian TV said soldiers came across chemical agents in rebel tunnels during an advance into the Jobar district.

"Army heroes are entering the tunnels of the terrorists and saw chemical agents," it quoted a "news source" as saying. "In some cases, soldiers are suffocating while entering Jobar. Ambulances came to rescue the people suffocating."

Soldiers discovered a cache of gas masks and imported pills used to ward off exposure to chemical attacks, it said, promising to air footage of "material and drums" later. The report could not be independently confirmed.

State television further accused the rebels of using poison gas "as a last resort after (government forces) achieved big gains during the last few days in Jobar".

Syrian opposition activists say President Bashar al-Assad's forces fired nerve gas projectiles into Jobar and other rebellious suburbs before dawn on Wednesday. Later in the week, activists crossed front lines around Damascus to smuggle out tissue samples from victims of the attack.

The Syrian government and the rebels blamed one another for several previous reported cases of poison gas attacks, both denying responsibility. No independent verification of details has been possible due to a lack of access to battle zones.

Damascus has said it would never deploy chemical weapons against its own citizens, and has suggested rebels may have carried out the latest attack themselves to provoke foreign intervention.

Obama has long been hesitant to intervene in Syria, wary of its position straddling fault lines of wider sectarian conflict in the Middle East, and he reiterated such reluctance on Friday.

INTELLIGENCE EVIDENCE

But, in a development that could raise pressure on Obama to act, American and European security sources said U.S. and allied intelligence agencies had made a preliminary assessment that chemical weapons were used by pro-Assad forces this week.

Major world powers - including Russia, Assad's main ally which has long blocked U.N.-sponsored intervention against him - have urged the Syrian leader to cooperate with a U.N. inspection team that arrived on Sunday to pursue earlier allegations of chemical weapons assaults in the civil war.

U.N. High Representative for Disarmament Affairs Angela Kane arrived to Damascus on Saturday to press for a Syrian government green light for inspectors to examine areas of Damascus suburbs said to have been targeted on Wednesday.

Assad's government has not said whether it will grant such access despite increasing pressure from the United Nations, Western and Gulf Arab countries and Russia. If confirmed, it would be the world's deadliest chemical attack in decades.

"The solution is obvious. There is a United Nations team on the ground, just a few kilometers away. It must very quickly be allowed to go to the site to carry out the necessary tests without hindrance," French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said on Saturday during a visit to the Palestinian territories.

Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle of Germany said it expected Russia to "raise the pressure on Damascus so that the inspectors can independently investigate".

President Hassan Rouhani of Iran, Assad's most powerful Middle East ally, acknowledged on Saturday for the first time chemical weapons had killed people in Syria and called for the international community to prevent their use.

Washington said on Friday it was repositioning warships in the Mediterranean, although officials cautioned that Obama had made no decision on any military move. A U.S. defense official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the navy would expand its presence there to four destroyers from three.

U.S. MILITARY OPTIONS

Among the military options under consideration are targeted missile strikes on Syrian units believed responsible for chemical attacks or on Assad's air force and ballistic missile sites, U.S. officials said. Such strikes could be launched from U.S. ships or combat aircraft capable of firing missiles from outside Syrian airspace, thereby avoiding Syrian air defenses.

But the defense official stressed the Navy had received no orders to prepare for any military operations regarding Syria.

Obama called the apparent chemical attack a "big event of grave concern" and one that demanded U.S. attention, but said he was in no rush to get war-weary Americans "mired" in another Middle East conflict.

"If the U.S. goes in and attacks another country without a U.N. mandate and without clear evidence that can be presented, then there are questions in terms of whether international law supports it," he said on Friday. "The notion that the U.S. can somehow solve what is a sectarian complex problem inside of Syria sometimes is overstated."

Obama's caution contrasted with calls for action from NATO allies, including France, Britain and Turkey, where leaders saw little doubt Assad's forces were behind the chemical attack.

While the West accused Assad of a cover-up by preventing the U.N. team from heading out to Damascus suburbs, Russia said the rebels were impeding an inquiry and that Assad would have no interest in using poison gas for fear of foreign intervention.

Igor Morozov, another senior pro-Kremlin lawmaker, told Interfax news agency: "Assad does not look suicidal. He well understands that in this (chemical attack) case, allies would turn away from him and ...opponents would rise. All moral constraints would be discarded regarding outside interference."

Alexei Pushkov, pro-Kremlin chairman of the international affairs committee in Russia's lower house of parliament, said: "In London they are ?convinced' that Assad used chemical weapons, and earlier they were ?convinced' that there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. It's the same old story."

Russia said last month that its analysis indicated a deadly projectile that hit a suburb of the Syrian city of Aleppo on March 19 contained the nerve agent sarin and was most likely fired by rebels.

More than two years into a civil war that has divided the Middle East along sectarian lines, the contrasting lines taken by Western governments and Russia on this week's chemical attack highlighted once again the international deadlock that has foiled effective outside efforts to stop the bloodshed.

Dos Palos City Council in California for the first time opens up with Hindu prayer

Dos Palos City Council in California for the first time opens up with Hindu prayer

Dos Palos City Council in California (USA), incorporated in 1935, had its first historic Hindu invocation on August 20 evening, containing verses from world's oldest existing scripture.

Distinguished Hindu statesman Rajan Zed delivered the invocation from ancient Sanskrit scriptures before the City Council. After Sanskrit delivery, he then read the English translation of the prayer. Sanskrit is considered a sacred language in Hinduism and root language of Indo-European languages. Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, recited from Rig-Veda, the oldest scripture of the world still in common use, besides lines from Upanishads and Bhagavad-Gita (Song of the Lord), both ancient Hindu scriptures. He started and ended the prayer with ?Om?, the mystical syllable containing the universe, which in Hinduism is used to introduce and conclude religious work.

Reciting from Brahadaranyakopanishad, Rajan Zed said, ?Asato ma sad gamaya, Tamaso ma jyotir gamaya, Mrtyor mamrtam gamaya?, which he then translated as ?Lead me from the unreal to the Real, Lead me from darkness to Light, and Lead me from death to Immortality.? Reciting from Bhagavad-Gita, he urged councilmembers to keep the welfare of others always in mind.

Councilmembers, city employees and public were seen standing in prayer mode with their heads bowed down during this invocation.

Wearing saffron colored attire, a ruddraksh mala (rosary), and traditional sandalpaste tilak (religious mark) on the forehead, Zed sprinkled few drops of water from river Ganga of India, considered holy by Hindus, around the podium before the prayer.

?It is a historic moment of pride for the community when the prayers from ancient Sanskrit scriptures are being read in this great hall of democracy of this great city of Dos Palos?, Zed stated before starting the invocation.

Rajan Zed is a global Hindu and interfaith leader, who besides taking up the cause of religion worldwide, has also raised huge voice against the apartheid faced by about 15-million Roma (Gypsies) in Europe. Bestowed with World Interfaith Leader Award; Zed is Senior Fellow and Religious Advisor to Foundation for Religious Diplomacy, Spiritual Advisor to National Association of Interchurch & Interfaith Families, etc.

Hinduism, oldest and third largest religion of the world, has about one billion adherents and moksh (liberation) is its ultimate goal. There are about three million Hindus in USA.

slideshow Polk School District teachers will have a new kind of apple on their desks this year, in the form of an Apple iPad.

At the end of last year, all teachers in Polk County checked out a new iPad from the district, and the school board recently approved the installation of 200 wireless access points in the schools to support them.

Polk School Superintendent William Hunter said that teachers will use the devices for lesson planning and instruction in the classroom.

The school district purchased 200 access points to allow the teachers to use the new iPads and their own laptops to give them access to the Internet. According to Hunter, students will also be using the access points for Internet access on their own devices.

A wireless access point extends a wireless network and allows multiple users to connect. Depending on the structure of the schools, a single access point can service a single classroom or several classrooms.

The wireless network will allow the teachers? new iPads to connect to their computers, their Smartboards and the Internet.

A Smartboard is a projection surface that teachers and students can interact with through digital ?markers? and computer interfaces.

?I came here in March, and one of the prevailing complaints from the teaching staff was about their access to the internet and the students? access to the internet,? Hunter said.

The board purchased the access points from Howard Technologies, the company that supplied the lowest bid. The total cost of the access points was $116,400, paid for by SPLOST funds. Hunter said that they will be installed by the school's maintenance and IT departments. The board also purchased additional bandwidth for increased Internet speed.

"We want (teachers) to plan instruction and deliver instruction from a mobile platform,? Hunter said. ?We?re in the process of putting all of our lesson planning on a mobile platform. It doesn?t mean that they can?t use their desktop, but if they are at home or traveling they will have the device and can work on it.?

?We are hopeful that Smartboards will be used as they were meant to be used, as an interactive device in the classroom,? Hunter said. ?There are apps that teachers can use to manipulate the Smartboard from their iPad as they walk around the room and they are able to help kids while they are teaching instead of standing by the smart board.?

But teachers will not be the only ones using iPads and other mobile devices in the schools ? the students will also be connected.

Last year a new program was started that checked out an iPad to each ninth grade student for the school year. The devices are to be used for research and educational purposes. This year, the tenth grade class will check out iPads and the new ninth graders will also receive iPads. Hunter said that he hopes to continue to purchase the devices until each high school student has an iPad.

Hunter explained that students will also be able to use their own devices.

?You don?t have to have a room full of this brand or that brand, you?ll be able to access and do the things you need to do with whatever devices you have,? Hunter said.

Other mobile platform tablets include Google?s Android tablets and Microsoft?s Surface tablet among others. In the future, if students own one of these devices, they will be able to use them in the classroom and for research.

?I see a day in the very near future in education where the school board will not have to buy iPads,? Hunter said. ?I see us being able to use different brands of mobile devices in one classroom to do the work that a teacher outlines students to do.?

Republicans weigh using debt limit as leverage on Obamacare

By Caren Bohan

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican lawmakers, who staunchly oppose President Barack Obama's signature healthcare law, are considering using a fall showdown over the country's borrowing limit as leverage to try to delay the law's implementation.

The idea is gaining traction among Republican leaders in the House of Representatives, aides said on Wednesday. An aide to House Majority Leader Eric Cantor said the debt limit is a "good leverage point" to try to force some action on the healthcare law known as "Obamacare."

"There are plenty of discussions ongoing but no decisions at this point," said another leadership aide.

Republicans are weighing the tactic as an alternative to another approach that would involve denying funding for the law and threatening a possible government shutdown.

The push to deny funding for Obamacare has the backing of some prominent Republican senators, including Ted Cruz of Texas and Marco Rubio of Florida.

But many Republicans in both the House and the Senate oppose the shutdown strategy, viewing it as a reckless move that is bound to fail. Many worry the gambit would cause a backlash against their party ahead of the 2014 congressional elections.

When lawmakers return on September 9 from their five-week summer recess, they will face two fall deadlines. If Congress does not pass a measure by October 1 to keep federal agencies funded, the government will shut down.

Another standoff looms in late October or early November when lawmakers must pass an increase in the U.S. debt limit or face a default on the country's debt.

Under one scenario for tackling the fall fiscal fights, Republicans might pass a two-month spending bill at the end of September. That would remove any threat of a shutdown before the debt limit deadline comes up.

REPUBLICANS EYE FALL OBAMACARE ROLLOUT

As Congress and Obama spar over spending and the debt limit this fall, Obama will also be focused on the rollout of key provisions of the health care law that kick in at the beginning of 2014.

Republicans see the coming weeks as their last chance to try to stop or weaken the law. They contend the law will be a burden on businesses and cost jobs.

In the House of Representatives, Congressman Mark Meadows, a Republican from North Carolina, has been trying to rally House Republicans behind the government shutdown strategy and plans to release a letter on Thursday signed by lawmakers who support that tactic.

Those who are cool to the shutdown strategy include Cantor and House Speaker John Boehner. Just before lawmakers headed out on their August recess, Boehner sought to rally Republicans behind an alternative approaches to undermining Obamacare.

In a closed-door meeting with House Republicans Boehner said the chamber would "take targeted, regular votes" throughout the fall aimed at weakening Obamacare.

With lawmakers still scattered throughout the country during the summer break, Boehner plans to hold a conference call on Thursday with Republican House members.

A senior Republican aide said Boehner holds such calls every August and that the purpose "is just to hear from members" about what constituents are saying.

With Obamacare a top issue for many lawmakers, it is sure to be discussed during the call.

In town hall-style gatherings and meetings that lawmakers are having with constituents during the recess, Obamacare has emerged as one of the biggest issues.

"There's concern, there's worry and then there's anger and fear," said Congressman Marlin Stutzman, a Republican of Indiana.

Stutzman said he plans to sign the letter being circulated by Meadows of North Carolina calling for a defunding of Obamacare.

On Wednesday night, at a lively town hall meeting in Allentown, Pennsylvania, Republican Representative Charlie Dent called Obamacare "fatally flawed" and predicted it would lead employers to cut workers' hours or jobs.

The Pennsylvania lawmaker talked of a hotel owner who confided to him that he's worried he will need to cut his workers' hours to part time. Starting in 2015, the law will require many companies to provide insurance for full-time employees.

Unlike Stutzman, Dent does not support using the threat of a government shutdown as leverage on Obamacare. He said he didn't think the tactic would work.

Obamacare was raised repeatedly by attendees at the town hall, although other issues such as immigration and tax reform also came up.

Conservative groups, including Heritage Action for America, have been holding events in lawmakers' districts to try to pressure them to support the push to withhold funding for the healthcare law.

Heritage Action is spending $550,000 on online ads and is holding a multi-state tour to push the issue.

Hot, dry summer pushes wildfire spending past $1B

GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) ? Wildfires burning in California, Oregon, Idaho and Montana are taxing national firefighting resources and helping to push spending past $1 billion for the year.

The National Interagency Fire Center in Boise upped the national wildfire preparedness level Tuesday to the highest level for the first time in five years.

The center lists two central Idaho wildfires as the country's top priorities, helping provide crews and resources for the Beaver Creek fire, which forced the evacuation of 1,250 homes in the resort area of Ketchum and Sun Valley and has cost nearly $12 million so far.

President Barack Obama was briefed Tuesday on the wildfires by his homeland security adviser, Lisa Monaco. The White House said the administration's focus is on supporting state and local first responders and that Obama's team is in ongoing contact with federal and local partners.

More than 40 uncontained, active and large wildfires dot the U.S. map from Arizona to Washington state and Alaska, the White House said. About 17,800 people have been dispatched to the fires.

Steve Gage, assistant director of operations for the fire center, said they can't fill all the requests for crews and equipment from the 48 fires that remain uncontained around the country.

Gage said as fire season progresses, the center moves crews around to where the greatest assets like houses are threatened, and tries to have crews positioned to catch new fires when they are small.

In California, a wildfire on the outskirts of Yosemite National Park threatened more than 2,000 structures and forced the evacuation of camps and remote rural homes. In three days, the fire has surged to more than 15 square miles and has destroyed two residences and five outbuildings, U.S. Forest Service spokesman Jerry Snyder said.

In Oregon, winds that draw windsurfers to the Columbia Gorge have doubled the size of a wildfire to 10 square miles. The Government Flat Fire has burned three homes and threatens dozens more on the northern flanks of Mount Hood, a fire spokesman said. About 50 homes have evacuated in the area of canyons 10 miles southwest of The Dalles.

Four days into the battle, the cost has topped $1 million, said Oregon Department of Forestry spokesman Dave Morman.

"That's one of the challenges when the fire gets into these long canyons, it's very, very difficult for firefighters," he said.

The boost in priority for Idaho's Beaver Creek fire gave fire managers resources they needed to start attacking the fire more directly, said fire spokesman Rudy Evenson. Weather conditions were also improving. The fire was 9 percent contained after burning 160 square miles and had 1,750 personnel. The cost through Monday was $11.6 million.

Nationally, federal agencies have spent more than $1 billion so far this year, about half last year's total of $1.9 billion, according to the fire center. There have been 33,000 fires that have burned more than 5,300 square miles ? an area nearly the size of Connecticut.

Whether costs top the 10-year average of $1.4 billion or the $1.9 billion spent in 2012 and 2006 will depend on the rest of the wildfire season, which traditionally gets very active in Southern California as late as October, Gage said.

Professor Norman Christensen of Duke University's Nicholas School of the Environment, an expert in the environmental impacts of forest fires, said fires have been particularly intense in Colorado, California and Idaho this year.

"Certainly drought in some areas has contributed to the number and intensity of fire events," he said in an email. "But many of the fires have been in highly populated, wilderness-urban interface areas such as Colorado Springs, Sun Valley, Idaho, and the west slope of the Sierra Nevada. That adds greatly to costs since so many more resources are required to protect built structures."

Jason Sibold, assistant professor of biogeography at Colorado State University, said since the 1990s, the climate has been changing, producing hotter, drier and longer summers in the West. That combined with more people building vacation homes in the woods pushes up costs.

"The societal demand to try to control and fight these fires is escalating at the same pace as the climate's warming," he said.

Despite firefighting efforts, more than 960 homes and 30 commercial buildings have burned this year, according to the fire center. And 30 firefighters have died in the effort, including 19 hotshots at Yarnell, Ariz. The annual average over the past 10 years is 17 dead.

The high monetary costs come despite a 5 percent cut in firefighting budgets due to the federal spending cuts known as sequestration, which eliminated 500 firefighters and 50 wildland fire engines this year. Meanwhile, the U.S. Forest Service has yet to activate a new generation of air tankers provided by private contractors, intended to deliver bigger payloads faster.

In Montana, Gov. Steve Bullock declared a state of emergency for 31 counties, allowing the use of National Guard resources.

Wind gusts pushed two lightning-caused fires to a combined 7,500 acres, or roughly 12 square miles near Lolo in southwestern Montana. A state fire official said those fires have burned at least four homes.

Obama Administration Makes Secret Deal with Mexico to Help Illegal Immigrants in the Workplace

Instead of making sure that U.S. employers are not hiring illegal immigrants, the Obama administration has actually signed a secret deal Illegal-Immigration-March-Photo-by-Jonathan-McIntosh-300x300with Mexico to protect ?the rights? of illegal immigrants in the workplace.?

According to this ?memorandum of understanding?, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission will spend U.S. taxpayer dollars to educate illegal immigrants about their civil rights, workplace safety, and minimum wage laws.? This is yet another example of how the Obama administration is openly flouting the law and doing all that it can to promote even more illegal immigration.?

We are rapidly becoming a lawless nation that has absolutely no regard for the rule of law, and it all starts with the horrendous example that is being set at the very top. I was absolutely stunned when I first heard about this new agreement.?

How in the world can the U.S. government promise to assist illegal immigrants in the workplace??

This deal probably breaks a whole bunch of existing immigration laws, but nobody is doing anything about it.?

The following is an excerpt?from the press release about this new deal?

The Miami District Office of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) entered into a Memorandum of? Understanding (MOU) in Orlando today with the Consulate General of Mexico in? Miami and Consulate of Mexico in Orlando.??The agreement establishes an ongoing collaboration between these? entities to provide Mexican nationals with information, guidance, and access to? resources on the prevention of discrimination in the workplace regardless of?immigration status.? Mexican Consul Efran Nicolas Leyva Acevedo of Orlando and Miami District Office Director Malcolm S. Medley signed the agreement. ?Acting? Mexican Consul General Vladimir Hernandez Lara of Miami signed the document? prior to the meeting today.

?By signing this Memorandum of Understanding today with the Mexican Consulate, we of the EEOC?s? Miami District have solidified our continued and longstanding commitment to this underserved community,? said Medley.? ?This agreement provides the opportunity for on?going education, outreach and service? by the EEOC to Mexican nationals in our area. ?We look forward to a long-lasting and significant partnership.?

Under the terms of the MOU, the EEOC will expand its relationship with these two consulates by providing them with Spanish-language materials explaining the laws enforced by the federal agency. ?In addition, the EEOC will partner with consulate? offices to provide information and training to areas of the state where migrant farm workers and other Mexican nationals live and work.

And of course this comes at a time of high unemployment for U.S. citizens and at a time when wages are being driven down by competition from illegal immigrants inside this country and by competition from foreign workers overseas.

Unfortunately, the Obama administration does not seem to care about that.? What is important to them is the radical political agenda that they are relentlessly pursuing.

The following is what former police detective Iris Aquino had to say about this agreement?

?In other words, the Obama administration has been siding with ? and protecting ? lawbreakers, while persecuting and prosecuting American business owners, who in the past administrations were denigrated and even arrested for hiring ? or harboring ? illegal aliens?

But of course this is not the first time the Obama administration has done this sort of thing.? Over the years the Obama administration has made it abundantly clear that it is on the side of the illegal immigrants.? In fact, the Obama administration has even gone after employers that require their employees to speak English in the workplace even though federal law permits them to do so?

Although federal law allows employers to require English on the job, a national healthcare firm will dish out nearly half a million dollars to settle a discrimination lawsuit in which the U.S. government alleges Hispanic workers were punished for speaking Spanish.

Filed by the federal agency that enforces the nation?s workplace discrimination laws, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the suit accuses Skilled Healthcare Group Inc. of enforcing an English-only rule against Hispanics. The firm operates nursing homes and assisted living facilities in Western and Southern states and the government says Hispanic employees were harassed for not speaking English.

And the Obama administration has also tried to do all that it can to get more immigrants enrolled in federal welfare programs.? In fact, the government actually has a website that teaches immigrants how to sign up for welfare programs once they arrive in the United States.? On WelcomeToUSA.gov, immigrants are encouraged to sign up for all of the ?government benefits? that they are eligible for.? Here is an excerpt from that page?

Depending on your immigration status, length of time in the United States, and income, you may be eligible for some federal benefit programs. Government assistance programs can be critically important to the well-being of some immigrants and their families. Frequently, however, there is a lack of information about how to access such benefits. Benefit programs can be complicated and you may be given misleading information about how they operate.

But illegal immigrants are not supposed to be eligible for welfare programs such as food stamps, right?

Technically yes, but the Obama administration has widely distributed materials that inform illegal immigrants that their immigration status will not be checked by government officials when they apply for food stamps.

How bizarre is that?

And not only is the Obama administration doing all that it can for illegal immigrants, it is even stopping state governments from enforcing our immigration laws.? In fact, the Obama administration actually took the state of Arizona to court to keep them from cracking down on illegal immigration.

Meanwhile, illegal immigration continues to have a very negative effect on thousands of communities all over the United States.? If you doubt this, please see my previous article entitled ?19 Very Disturbing Facts About Illegal Immigration That Every American Should Know?.

So what do you think about all of this?

Do you believe that the Obama administration should be helping illegal immigrants in the workplace?
