Maria Cristina Falls: Iligan?s Greatest Heritage
Iligan, Lanao del Norte was never behind from other cities in the Philippines. It is gifted and known for at least 23 majestic waterfalls dotting its province, one of which is the Maria Cristina Falls ? the landmark of Iligan City.
Also known as the ?Mother of Industry? and ?Fountainhead of Progress?, Maria Cristina Falls stands 320 feet high, spews 130 cubic meters per second of water and is the veritable source of industrial power in the city.
The majestic falls is located at the borders of Barangay Maria Cristina in Ditucalan and Buru-un. Maria Cristina Falls not only gives beauty in Mindanao, but it is also the primary source of electric power as harnessed by the Agus VI hydroelectric plant. It generates 70% of electricity in Mindanao.
It is also a great place for people with desire for adventure: the large natural land has ziplines , wall climbing facilities, butterfly farm, a crocodile farm and a zoo.
According to legend, the name Maria Cristina came from the tragic story of two loving sisters, Maria and Cristina. The sisters were kind and were the only ones living near the falls. The two lived peacefully until a son of a prominent Sultan went searching for a bride, he saw the two sisters and fell in love with them.
Maria realized that he had deep feelings for the Sultan?s son and was anguished about the situation that she decided to end her life by jumping off the falls. Grief stricken, Cristina did the same. The Sultan?s son discovered their bodies and buried them under the fall, thereby naming it after them.
Bocaue Pagoda Festival: a celebration of history, tradition and heroism
Every first Sunday of July, the town of Bocaue in Bulacan celebrates the fluvial Bocaue Pagoda Festival or ?Pagoda sa Wawa? to commemorate the discovery of the miraculous cross floating on the Bocaue River 200 years ago.
During the festival, a replica of the cross is paraded on a huge pagoda ornately adorned with magnificent trimmings and guided by colorful boats.
Hundreds attend the procession for a nine-day novena, during which they feast and celebrate the legendary rescue of the Holy Cross from the river. Those who cannot find space on the crowded pagoda simply swim alongside.
In 1993, the tradition was stopped because of the tragic sinking of the Pagoda which killed many devotees. During the tragedy, one kid named Sajid Bulig, sacrificed himself to save four children from drowning to the river. Bulig?s act of heroism is chronicled in the social studies textbooks used in public and private schools.
Today, the Bocaue Pagoda Festival continues, partly, to remember the dead and to maintain better order and safety.

Every month of July in the provincial capital of Koronadal City, Tinalak or T?nalak Festival is celebrated to commemorate the founding anniversary of South Cotabato.

Tagaytay: A holiday in the sky
Need a break from the busy and bustling city streets? Vacations need not be held only during the summer season, indeed there is one place that is close to the city, and as close to paradise as one can find.
To wake up in the morning or see the sunset overlooking Taal volcano will be an experience a tourist might never forget for reasons such as follows:
Taal Volcano, was originally a huge volcano, that towered 18,000 feet up into the sky. It has been called the smallest active volcano, because it seems small now, but many people don?t realize that it is one of the largest volcanoes in the world. It is located about 60-km south of Manila on ?volcano island? inside a lake called Taal Lake. Tagaytay Ridge is at the rim of the volcano, when the volcano was 18,000 feet high, Tagaytay Ridge would have been only about a sixth of the way to the top of the volcano. In the distance, across the lake, is Mount Makulot.
As with most tourist destinations throughout the world, there is no shortage of touts here. You?ll see them holding up signs that say, ?Boat Trip To Volcano? or similar. A trip to the volcano is recommended on at least a half day for the sojourn. One can even cook hard boiled eggs there, which makes for quite an experience visiting this great natural wonder. Throw in the clean cool air, great hospitality, the calm and relaxing atmosphere, plus one of the best bargains in Asia, and it makes for a visit you can?t beat!
