It may surprise a few to hear Manchester United are out of the reckoning for a Champions League place this season, but before supporters start lambasting David Moyes for a dismal transfer window, this is in the ?Twitter Premier League?, rather than the real thing.

Cardiff City fan and social media aficionado Andrew Isidoro has created a league table based on the Twitter followings of England?s top-flight clubs.

The top and bottom of the pile may not be too dissimilar to the ?official? version played out every weekend but Manchester United, who only set up a Twitter account earlier this year, may regret not jumping on the bandwagon sooner, with their feed languishing in fifth place ? behind local rivals Manchester City.

Arsenal top the Twitter table with a staggering 2,741,610 followers, while London neighbours Chelsea are just behind, ahead of Liverpool, the two Manchester sides and ? Gunners fans will be pleased to see they?ve beaten Spurs twice inside a week ? Tottenham.

Propping up the table are Premier League new boys Hull City, with just 51,453 followers, while Crystal Palace and Cardiff make up the remainder of the ?relegation places?.

Corporations do more to put art on public display

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) ? Corporate art buying in North American has fallen off since the boom days of the 1970s and 1980s but even as the economy improves, some companies are buying less art but doing more to put their works out for the public to enjoy.

There are about 1,500 corporations in the world with art collections, with some of the largest held by banks and financial institutions, according to the International Directory of Corporate Art Collections.

Shirley Reiff Howarth, the editor of the directory, said that since 2000, the percentage of collections listed as "ongoing," or still being added to, has dropped from 55 percent to about 40 percent. Many corporations are limiting new purchases for new buildings, expansions or renovations.

"While the volume of buying has been reduced, educational programs have increased and the collections are used for more than simply enhancing the walls of the company and its image," Howarth said.

Bank of America, with over 30,000 artworks created from several mergers, has one of the largest collections in North America. Instead of buying new art, it focuses on the arts programs it has created, including Art In Our Communities, which has loaned fully curated exhibitions to 60 museums worldwide since 2008.

"This is something that resonates with the communities where we loan the exhibitions," said Allen Blevins, who oversees the bank's collection and art programs.

The Charlotte, N.C.-based company currently has 16 traveling exhibitions, representing 2,500 works. Among them is a show at the Museo del Novecento in Milan of Andy Warhol's most important silkscreen portfolios.

"The level of appreciation has become more about education," Howarth said.

At Johnson & Johnson's sprawling I.M. Pei-designed headquarters in New Brunswick, there are two galleries that feature continuous exhibitions, one for special and touring shows and the other for New Jersey artists. They are open to the public by appointment.

Like other corporations, the medical and pharmaceutical giant also lends its artworks. A drawing by Alice Aycock was featured in a retrospective of the artist at a Long Island museum and a George Segal sculpture was included in a major traveling exhibition.

It has also presented other programs based on employee or community interest, including a show on New Jersey actor, opera star and civil rights activist Paul Robeson that traveled to several U.S. cities.

At Neiman Marcus, one of the few luxury retailers to boast an art collection, the art-appreciation concept is extended to its customers by turning all 42 of its stores into galleries.

At its Paramus, N.J., store, a Roy Lichtenstein screenprint decorates the men's department and a whimsical display by glass sculptor Dale Chihuly dominates its store windows.

The retailer has about 3,500 pieces in its collection, which was started in 1951 with the commission of Alexander Calder's large-scale mobile "Mariposa," now on display at its Chicago store.

Neiman Marcus' in-house curator Julie Krosnick said the idea from the beginning was to give customers "something that is culturally stimulating and thought-provoking, something that is not about buying and selling merchandise."

On a recent shopping trip to the Paramus store, Esther Seiger of Monsey, N.Y., said, "You see all this pretty art and it puts you in a buying mood."

South Korea?s KNOC to sell Canada?s Harvest Operations: report

State-owned Korea National Oil Corporation (KNOC) plans to sell Harvest Operations Corp, its wholly-owned Canada-based subsidiary, a South Korean newspaper cited its CEO as saying on Thursday.

KNOC chief executive Suh Moon-kyu told reporters the state-run oil company had decided to sell Harvest, with three or four parties having shown interest, Maeil Business Newspaper reported.

KNOC bought the Canadian oil and gas trust for US$1.7-billion in 2009. Harvest reported a net loss of $720-milliondollars in 2012.

A KNOC spokesman said it was considering measures including the sale of Harvest to improve KNOC?s financial conditions, although the details of any sale had not been decided.

Federal Jury Orders Motorola Mobility To Pay Microsoft $14.5 Million In Patent Case

court-rulingA federal jury has found Motorola Mobility failed to license standard patents at a reasonable rate and ordered the Google-owned handset maker to pay Microsoft about $14.5 million in damages. This is the second of two federal court decisions determining that the royalties Motorola Mobility charges for "standard-essential" patents used in Microsoft products, including Xbox consoles, are too high.

Did Ancient Earth-Chilling Meteor Crash Near Canada?

A meteor or comet impact near Quebec heaved a rain of hot melted rock along North America's Atlantic Coast about 12,900 years ago, a new study claims.

Scientists have traced the geochemical signature of the BB-sized spherules that rained down back to their source, the 1.5-billion-year-old Quebecia terrane in northeastern Canada near the Gulf of Saint Lawrence. At the time of the impact, the region was covered by a continental ice sheet, like Antarctica and Greenland are today.

"We have provided evidence for an impact on top of the ice sheet," said study co-author Mukul Sharma, a geochemist at Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H. The results were published today (Sept. 2) in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Younger Dryas?

The new research shakes up a controversial theory about a big climate shift called the Younger Dryas, when Earth abruptly swung into a glacial period 12,900 years ago. The cooling has been attributed to a sudden shutdown in Northern Atlantic Ocean currents, caused by a big glacial lake flood out the St. Lawrence or Mackenzie Rivers. But in 2007, scientists suggested that comet or meteor impacts or atmospheric fireballs triggered the Younger Dryas, though no crater of the right age has ever been found.

The tiny particles from New Jersey and Pennsylvania, analyzed by Sharma and his colleagues, have never been accurately dated, Sharma admits. They could be several thousands years older than the widespread glacial event. "We are assuming they are Younger Dryas, but [dating] is one of the things that should be done better," Sharma told LiveScience.

And geochemical tracers in the molten rock show it can't be traced back to a recently discovered impact crater near Quebec called Corossal crater, thought to be Younger Dryas-age. [When Space Attacks: The 6 Craziest Meteor Impacts]

The researchers also proved that spherules from sites in North America and Europe, thought to be evidence of Younger Dryas comet impacts, didn't come from outer space. Sharma and his colleagues measured osmium isotopes in the melted rock and their surrounding sediment. Meteorites usually carry much more osmium than Earth rocks. (Isotopes are versions of elements with different numbers of neutrons.) But none of the spherules were extraterrestrial, Sharma said.

"Clearly these things were produced in an impact fireball, but we didn't find any evidence of meteorites," Sharma told LiveScience.

Yet Sharma remains convinced that the spherules from the Northeast Atlantic sites link up to the Younger Dryas cooling. "We have for the first time narrowed down the region where a Younger Dryas impact did take place, even though we have not yet found its crater," he said.

'Fringe science'

Scientists on the other side of the impact theory debate are not so sure.

"At this point, the pro-impact literature is fringe science being promoted by a single journal," said Nicholas Pinter, a geologist at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, who was not involved in the PNAS research.

Sharma's osmium isotope analysis of Younger Dryas sediments supports studies that show high concentrations of iridium (a meteorite impact marker) in Younger Dryas layers are erroneous, said Gregory Ravizza, a geologist at the University of Hawaii, also not involved in the research. Osmium and iridium concentrations tend to track each other ? both will be high at the same spot, Ravizza said, casting doubt on Sharma's conclusions.
