Study shows voting higher among youth using social media to express beliefs

Tuesday, October 30, 2012

Young adults who are interested in politics are more likely than others to participate in public affairs by speaking out about their political beliefs using Facebook, online blogs and other social media, according to a study performed by researchers from the Edward R. Murrow College of Communication at Washington State University.

Co-authored by Bruce Pinkleton, a communications professor at WSU, and Yushu Zhou, a former WSU graduate student who is now a doctoral candidate at Stanford University, the study is scheduled for publication in the November issue of the journal, Mass Communication and Society. It is based on an analysis of the political involvement and online interactions of more than 400 undergraduate college students.

Pinkleton and Zhou found that participants who were interested in election information were more likely to use social media, public affairs websites and other digital information sources to learn about the elections and were more likely to participate in public affairs by expressing their opinions online. Prior research has shown that the more informed a citizen is, the more likely they are to participate in elections. They also found that participants using traditional news sources, government sources, and candidate websites had higher levels of political efficacy, or the belief that their participation matters.

"In 2012, candidates have more channels to keep in touch with voters, such as Facebook, Twitter, and even Linkedin where presidential candidates have created their own profiles," said Zhou. "These new communication channels not only provide richer political information and interactive messages for voters, especially young voters, but also reshape the relationships between candidates and voters."

Current presidential candidates Barack Obama and Mitt Romney offer political websites and social networking sites in order to promote their campaigns. Both candidates use not only social media, such as Facebook, but have also developed Tumblr, Spotify, and Flickr accounts. These are all websites that enable political engagement, and are typically used by young adults. The findings of the study are expected to become particularly significant as candidates continue to branch out into other new forms of media.

"When young people are motivated, even blogs and social media can be important sources of information and contribute to their political participation," said Pinkleton. "Given the historically low levels of political participation among young people, this is an important finding. The more we can get people involved in the political process, the more likely we are to enjoy the benefits of a strong, healthy democracy."

The article is entitled "Modeling the Effects of Political Information Source Use and Online Expression on Young Adults' Political Efficacy."

European Parliament cancels trip to Iran over activists

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - A European Parliament delegation has called off a trip to Iran after a request to meet two jailed activists was refused.

The decision came after Iran's ambassador to the European Union said it was impossible to guarantee that the members of the European Parliament could meet jailed human rights lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh and filmmaker Jafar Panahi, the European Parliament said on Saturday.

The parliament awarded the two its Sakharov prize for human rights and freedom of thought on Friday.

"I deeply regret that permission to meet the Sakharov laureates was withheld. The European Parliament is nevertheless determined to continue its support for and involvement with the Iranian civil society," European Parliament President Martin Schulz said in a written statement.

Ties between Iran and Europe have become increasingly strained over Tehran's disputed nuclear program.

Meetings between European and Iranian parliamentary delegations were meant to keep open another line of communication, even though the European Parliament has little influence over dealings with Tehran.

Western countries accuse Iran of seeking a nuclear bomb; Tehran denies this and says its program is peaceful.

Iran's Mehr news agency quoted an Iranian parliamentary official as saying the European delegation had wanted a visit with Sotoudeh and Panahias as a "precondition".

"The European parliamentary delegation wished to visit two Iranian political prisoners and give them a prize," said Hossein Sheikholeslam, international affairs adviser to Iran's parliament, according to Mehr. "Iran did not agree with this condition."

A European parliamentary spokeswoman earlier said it had been the Iranians who had cancelled the trip, but European officials later said this was not the case and it had been the European Parliament's decision.

Giant arthropods, then and now ? Why Evolution Is True

by Greg Mayer

The Naturmuseum Senckenberg in Frankfurt am Main, one of Europe?s great natural history museums, has announced the discovery in Laos of one of the world?s largest known daddy longlegs by Senckenberg researcher Peter Jager. The apparently new species is now being studied by Jager and his Senckenberg colleague, Ana Lucia Tourinho. Daddy longlegs are also called harvestmen, although I grew up with lots of daddy longlegs, and never knew them to be called harvestmen except in books.

(The current incarnation of the Senckenbergischen Naturforschenden Gesellschaft incorporates the museum in Frankfurt and several other German natural history museums and research institutes.)

Many people mistake daddy longlegs for spiders. While both spiders and daddy longlegs are eight-legged arachnids, daddy longlegs have a more compact body with the abdomen and cephalothorax not separated by a constriction as in spiders, and their legs are invariably thread-like. The new giant form from Laos, which has not yet been formally described as a new species, has a leg span of over 33 cm. The record is 34 cm for a South American species.

Although science fiction films abound in giant arthropods or arthropod-like aliens (my favorite: Attack of the Crab Monsters), it is in fact hard for an

Attack of the Crab Monsters (1957), original poster from Wikipedia.

arthropod to get very large. The size limitation of arthropods is due to constraints on their chitinous exoskeletons and their ability to breathe. The University of California, Berkeley, website Understanding Evolution has great animations explaining these size constraints. Both kinds of constraints arise from the disproportion of size and shape as animals get bigger. Basically, many of the functions of animals (including their weight bearing skeleton and their respiratory surfaces) increase as the square of their increase in size, whereas their need for the functions increases as the cube of their size. So, if you double the size of an animal, without changing its shape, you will quadruple its surface area, but its volume will increase by a factor of eight. Thus if you have a physiologically important surface area (say the lining of your respiratory system), you are going to be lacking by a factor of two, as your oxygen needs are set by your volume. The ?square/cube problem? in biology has long been known, and J.B.S. Haldane, one of the founders of modern evolutionary theory, wrote an influential popular article on the subject, ?On being the right size?, in 1926. (Haldane, by the way, a geneticist-physiologist-soldier-pacifist-communist-Hindu-atheist-patriot-expatriate, was the original most interesting man in the world, as we?ve noted before here at WEIT.)

The largest insects today are not very big. They grew larger in the distant past, and this is thought to be related to a higher concentration of oxygen in the atmosphere at that time (35% during the Carboniferous period, compared to 21 % today). The largest known arthropod ever, also an arachnid, but an aquatic one, a sea scorpion or eurypterid from the Devonian, was discovered by Simon Braddy and colleagues a few years ago (pdf).

Giant arthropods from the fossil record compared with the average height of a (British) human male; (a) the eurypterid Jaekelopterus rhenaniae, Early Devonian, Germany; (b) the trilobite Isotelus rex, Late Ordovician, Manitoba, Canada; (c) the dragonfly Meganeura monyi, Late Carboniferous, France; (d) the millipede Arthropleura armata, Late Carboniferous, Europe. Scale bar (a?d), 50 cm. (e) Chelicera of the giant eurypterid J. rhenaniae from the Early Devonian of Willwerath, Germany, PWL 2007/1-LS. Photograph, the disarticulated fixed (above) and (rotated) free ramus (below). Scale bar, 10 cm.

They were 2.5 m long, and longer if you stretched out their claws (and imagine the size of the turds produced by d!). This is, as shown in the figure above somewhat larger that the typical British male (who, I must say, appears admirably buff and well-muscled in this outline drawing; perhaps it?s all that wrist-wrestling, or is it elbow-bending, down at the pub).

Automatic spending cuts are issue in some races

LEESBURG, Va. (AP) ? In many ways, it's an odd topic to make a central campaign issue: sequestration.

Many voters greet the word with a blank stare or slightly glazed eyes, and when Republican George Allen brings up the issue in his Senate campaign, he first has to explain what he's talking about.

What's more, the issue will come to a head before either he or his opponent, Democrat Tim Kaine, will be sworn in.

Still, in a state like Virginia where a big chunk of the economy is dependent on government spending and military dollars in particular, the automatic, across-the-board budget cuts known as sequestration are a critical issue. Whether it's a political issue that connects with voters remains to be seen.

"I think Virginians are well aware of it," said Allen, who perhaps more than any other candidate has latched on to sequestration as a campaign issue. "People in northern Virginia and Hampton Roads (parts of the state with large populations of military workers and contractors) are really aware of it."

In the last of the presidential debates Monday night, President Barack Obama said flatly that sequestration "will not occur." But the White House also has made clear that Obama hasn't given up making any alternative include higher taxes on the wealthy.

In a nutshell, sequestration was put into play as part of a budget compromise in August 2011 that averted a default on the federal debt. Under the compromise, which had bipartisan support, Congress would have to come up with $1.2 trillion in alternative budget cuts by the end of this year.

If it were to fail, automatic cuts of $1.2 trillion over nine years would begin on Jan. 2, 2012, with half coming from defense. The sequester cuts were designed to be so painful that Congress would be compelled to act. They are a big part of the so-called fiscal cliff, from which the country could plunge back into recession, economists warn, if Congress also lets all of the Bush-era tax cuts expire at the first of the year.

Obama signed the budget deal. The Republican vice presidential candidate, Rep. Paul Ryan, voted for it. So did House Speaker John Boehner. Neither Allen nor Kaine was a member of Congress at the time.

The looming, one-year defense cuts of about $55 billion also have popped up in House races in California and Colorado, where Democratic challengers have criticized incumbent Republicans for jeopardizing military dollars and jobs. In key states and districts, the obscure deal is a pocketbook issue with voters still jittery over jobs and bills in the wake of recession.

In a newly redrawn San Diego-area district, Democratic challenger Scott Peters has criticized GOP Rep. Brian Bilbray for voting for the budget plan, warning of the potential loss of 30,000 jobs in the region. Bilbray insisted that it wasn't ideal, but it was the best bipartisan solution available.

In a suburban Denver district that is home to Buckley Air Force Base, Democratic challenger Joe Miklosi assails Republican Rep. Mike Coffman, arguing that the congressman and other House Republicans have forced the crisis by refusing to compromise on a budget deal.

"Some of these people are going to get a pink slip because Congress didn't do its job," said Miklosi. "We're playing with people's lives here. They're nervous, they're concerned."

Coffman, who served in Iraq with the Marines, said most voters are broadly concerned about the national budget but aren't yet attuned to the latest fiscal deadline and what it would mean. He believes a spending deal will be reached in time to avoid the cuts, saying he gets questions about sequestration mostly from business executives in military industries.

"They're very worried about it, but it hasn't filtered down to the rank-and-file employees in those same businesses," Coffman said.

Kaine, a former governor and chairman of the Democratic National Committee, said in a debate in July that he supported the default-avoiding budget compromise. Allen seized on the remark and has run ads accusing Kaine of supporting a deal that holds the military hostage. He cites studies that have shown that as many as 200,000 jobs in Virginia could be lost if sequestration takes effect.

Kaine, for his part, makes clear that he opposes sequestration and the defense cuts associated with it. He has offered an alternative that would mix other spending cuts with higher taxes on those making above $500,000 a year.

His spokeswoman, Brandi Hoffine, said the issue shows a difference in the candidates' philosophies: Kaine was willing to accept an imperfect compromise to prevent the potential catastrophe of default, while Allen would have shunned compromise and risked default to pursue an all-or-nothing agenda.

"Business people know that a default would have had a very serious impact on the entire economy, including defense," Hoffine said.

In Loudoun County, an outer suburb of Washington and home to some tech companies and defense contractors, the issue of sequestration is not pervasive, said Tony Howard, president of the county's Chamber of Commerce.

"Inside the Beltway it dominates the conversation." Howard said. "Here, I don't think it's something that a lot of the rank-and-file business owners are focused on."

Business owners, Howard said, more generally see the sequestration dilemma as a broader symptom of the general dysfunction in Washington.

"A lot of the business people I talk to, they don't get it. They don't understand why compromise is a dirty word," he said. "In business, you have to compromise."

At a rally last week for GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney in Chesapeake, Va., part of the Hampton Roads region that has a large military presence, the issue was important for some voters but not others.

"It's a big issue, not only because I work in the shipyard, because if the federal government is going to spend money, it should spend money to protect and defend the country," said Vitor Maruues, a retired Air Force maintenance officer and now an engineering analyst at Newport News Shipbuilding. "I'd rather have paid workers in the shipyard and other defense contractors that are scientists, engineers, metal cutters, pipe fitters, plumbers than provide for people on unemployment, on food stamps and on welfare."

CPR less likely for minorities on street or home

Tappe owes her life to bystanders' willingness to offer help. In 2004, she collapsed at her office in Iowa. A co-worker called 911; another quickly began CPR and someone else used the office's automated heart defibrillator. An ambulance took Tappe to the hospital, where doctors said her heart had stopped. (AP) ? People who collapse from cardiac arrest in poor black neighborhoods are half as likely to get CPR from family members at home or bystanders on the street as those in better-off white neighborhoods, according to a study that found the reasons go beyond race.

The findings suggest a big need for more knowledge and training, the researchers said.

The study looked at data on more than 14,000 people in 29 U.S. cities. It's one of the largest to show how race, income and other neighborhood characteristics combine to affect someone's willingness to offer heart-reviving help.

More than 300,000 people suffer a cardiac arrest in their homes or other non-hospital settings every year, and most don't survive. A cardiac arrest is when the heart stops, and it's often caused by a heart attack, but not always. Quick, hard chest compressions can help people survive.

For their study, researchers looked at the makeup of neighborhoods and also the race of the victims. They found that blacks and Hispanics were 30 percent less likely to be aided than white people. The odds were the worst if the heart victim was black in a low-income black neighborhood.

The researchers also found that regardless of a neighborhood's racial makeup, CPR was less likely to be offered in poor areas. That shows that socio-economic status makes more difference than the neighborhood's racial makeup, said lead author Dr. Comilla Sasson, of the University of Colorado in Denver.

While few people in poor black neighborhoods got CPR, those who did faced double the odds of surviving. Overall, only 8 percent of patients survived until at least hospital discharge, but 12 percent of those who got bystander CPR did versus just 6 percent of those who did not.

About 80 percent of the cardiac arrest victims in the study had collapsed in their own homes. That suggests lack of knowledge about how to do CPR. But also, people tend to panic and freeze when they encounter someone in cardiac arrest, and they need to know that cardiopulmonary resuscitation is easier than many realize, Sasson said.

She said the study results should prompt public outcry ? especially since most people who suffer cardiac arrest in non-hospital settings won't survive and those statistics haven't changed in 30 years.

"We can't accept that anymore," she said. "It shouldn't matter where I drop to have someone help me."

The study appears in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine.

The researchers analyzed data from 2005-2009 from a cardiac arrest registry coordinated by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Emory University. They also examined U.S. Census data in cities where study patients were stricken ? including Atlanta; Boston; Columbus, Ohio; Denver; Houston; Nashville; and San Francisco. Whether similar results would be found in small cities or rural areas isn't known.

Much of the research was done before experts changed CPR advice in a move many think may encourage bystanders to offer help. American Heart Association guidelines issued in 2008 emphasize quick, hard chest compressions rather than mouth-to-mouth resuscitation ? removing some of the discomfort factor.

Mary Tappe owes her life to bystanders' willingness to offer help.

In 2004, she collapsed at her office in Iowa. A co-worker called 911; another quickly began CPR and someone else used the office's automated heart defibrillator. An ambulance took Tappe to the hospital, where doctors said her heart had stopped. They never determined why but implanted an internal defibrillator.

Tappe, 51, who now lives in Englewood, Colo., said raising awareness about the importance of CPR is "incredibly important because that's the first step" to helping people survive.

CPR specialist Dr. Dana Edelson, an assistant professor at the University of Chicago Medical Center, said the new research echoes smaller studies showing bystander CPR depends on neighborhood characteristics, including a Chicago study that found intervention occurred most often in integrated neighborhoods.

"Nothing that we do has as big an impact on survival as CPR, and it's so cheap," Edelson said, noting that online videos demonstrate how to do CPR.

It involves pushing hard and fast on the victim's chest; research has shown using the beat of the old Bee Gees song "Stayin' Alive" is a good guide.

"It's your ultimate low-budget solution to improving survival," Edelson said.

Dr. David Keseg, an emergency medicine specialist at Ohio State University, has helped teach CPR to eighth-graders in inner-city Columbus, Ohio. That includes giving them free classes and CPR kits.

"We tell them to take them home and show their families and neighborhoods how to do it," Keseg said.

"It's kind of a drop in the bucket," but it's the kind of targeted approach that is needed to improve the odds of surviving a cardiac arrest, he said.

"Ghost Exchange" film questions runaway stock market technology

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A Washington-based filmmaker is taking a hard look at how the U.S. stock market evolved from a crowded, noisy trading space into a quiet one dominated by machines in her new film, "Ghost Exchange."

The feature-length documentary film portrays the market as a system in need of serious repair, with flaws that could be costing the U.S. economy some 20 million jobs.

The film is being released amid growing attention to problems in the stock market. Investors have been pulling money out of stocks despite the major indexes approaching the highs before the 2008-09 global financial crisis.

Following the near collapse of market-making giant Knight Capital after a trading software glitch on August 1, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission held a roundtable on stock market technology. Meanwhile, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission is getting ready to consider a concept release with ideas for better regulation of electronic trading.

Day-to-day events in the stock market have kept attention focused on high frequency trading. On Wednesday, traders blamed the high-speed machines for a quick, sharp dip in the price of AT&T shares following the company's earnings report. AT&T's stock fell from $34.50 to $33 and bounced back in just four seconds.

The creator of "Ghost Exchange," Camilla Sullivan, a documentarian and marketing professional who wrote and directed the film herself and produced it with her partner, Rob Lyall, said she hopes it will spur regulators and industry leaders to work together to repair the system.

"Are we taking care of and nurturing our capital markets or do we have the potential to lose something very important?" Sullivan said in an interview with Reuters.

"The market has evolved far more quickly than the regulators can regulate," she added. "We're not saying it's their fault. They barely have the skills or the technology or the resources to process the changes."

HIGH-FREQUENCY TRADING

For the film, Sullivan interviewed two of the most outspoken critics of high-frequency trading, Themis Trading co-founders Joe Saluzzi and Sal Arnuk. She also spoke with Direct Edge Chief Executive William O'Brien, Vanguard Group Chief Investment Officer George Sauter and Seth Merrin, the president and chief executive of Liquidnet Holdings.

"Everyone that we selected to interview for this film we believe are the type of industry leaders you would want," Sullivan said.

Sullivan said she is in talks with distributors to try to get "Ghost Exchange" out to the public, and she has submitted the film to "all of the major festivals."

A former corporate communications executive originally from Sydney, Sullivan moved to the United States and began making films in 2007. Through her production company, Arbitrage Pictures, she is also planning a documentary that focuses specifically on initial public offerings.

The drop in the number of IPOs is what Sullivan says is costing the U.S. economy millions of jobs. Citing expert research, Sullivan said small companies' inability to access the stock market in the current environment is preventing new hiring and making it impossible for companies to take bold risks.

In addition to the film company, Sullivan runs Visionista, a Washington-based video marketing company.

She said her interest in the U.S. stock market was driven by her background in finance. When the Dow Jones industrial average plunged 700 points in a matter of seconds on May 6, 2010 in what was later called the "flash crash," it grabbed her attention. High-frequency traders have been blamed for pulling out of the market when stock prices started to fall, accelerating the drop in prices.

"I didn't realize the majority of trades in the United States are executed by computer, and not just by computer but by algorithm. What's that doing to the structure and shape of capital markets?"

But "Ghost Exchange" doesn't focus solely on high-frequency trading. It also deals with issues like order types, tick sizes, and the segmentation that has separated access to large-cap and small-cap stocks in recent years.

Sullivan has concluded that regulators and the industry need to work more closely with each other to fix individual problems. She also believes the SEC should add more market experts to its staff and beef up its presence in New York and Chicago, the centers of U.S. trading.

The SEC's new Office of Analytics and Research, which will focus on monitoring markets and analyzing trading data, is "a good first step," Sullivan said.

"I think it's good that they have the same technology on the outside that the industry has on the inside," she said.

Mass. pharmacy dodged reprimand after protest

BOSTON (AP) ? Massachusetts regulators in 2004 proposed a formal reprimand for a company now linked to deadly meningitis outbreak, but they never delivered it after the company protested the reprimand could be "fatal to the business."

The sanction by the Board of Registration in Pharmacy was included in a proposed consent agreement that was meant to resolve complaints against the New England Compounding Center in Framingham. The complaints included a failure to meet accepted standards for making the same steroid that's been connected to the outbreak.

The agreement was among documents released this week by the state Department of Health that provide more details about past incidents at NECC, which was shut down in the wake of the fungal meningitis outbreak that has reached 17 states, sickening 317 people, 24 of whom have died. Compounding pharmacies like NECC custom mix solutions in doses or forms generally not commercially available.

The state has now moved to revoke NECC's license, but the reprimand represents a missed opportunity to crack down on the lab years before the current outbreak.

The proposed consent agreement, sent to owner Barry Cadden for review in October 2004, included the reprimand and a three-year probationary period for the company's registration and Cadden's license.

In its response, the company's attorney wrote that the board's dealings with the company were "a success story" and a reprimand was unwarranted.

"The collateral consequences to many, if not all of NECC's 42 other licenses (to operate in other states), would be potentially fatal to the business," attorney Paul Cirel wrote.

"Such a catastrophe is clearly not the intended result of the Board's proposed reprimand, nor is it warranted in this case," Cirel wrote. "The Board's mandate is to protect the public health safety and welfare, not punish the licensees."

In a footnote, he wrote, "Once disclosed, the reprimand will surely result in inquiries/investigations in those other jurisdictions. Regardless of the derivative actions taken, the attendant legal and administrative costs will be devastating."

The case ended without disciplinary action as part of a different consent agreement reached with the board in 2006.

Cirel did not respond to requests for comment from The Associated Press.

The 2006 agreement was signed under then-Gov. Mitt Romney's administration, but some members from that time remain on the pharmacy board.

Alec Loftus, a spokesman for the state's office of health and human services, said the state has expanded its investigation to include how the 2006 consent agreement was reached, including why the board never issued the reprimand and whether that was related to the protest from the company.

Loftus called the consent agreement "very troubling."

He added that the state was still compiling information on how frequently formal reprimands are given.

Loyd V. Allen Jr., editor of the International Journal of Pharmaceutical Compounding, said the proposed three years' probation indicates the board considered the violations very serious. He said a plea from the company should have been irrelevant to the board's decision.

"Whether or not it's going to be hurtful or harmful to the business shouldn't really be the issue if patient safety is on the line," Allen said.

The pharmacy board recommended the reprimand after an investigation that followed a confidential report filed with a U.S. Food and Drug Administration district office in Stoneham in 2002. The report alleged that two patients had an unspecified "adverse effect" after taking an NECC compounded Betamethasone Repository Injection, a steroid used to treat joint pain and arthritis that's different from the one linked to the current meningitis outbreak.

An inspector's report, completed in March 2004 after numerous interactions between the state and NECC, said a toxin had been found in the drug and the company couldn't produce various records about the drug, including test results on its sterility. Similar problems have been uncovered in a preliminary investigation prompted by the outbreak, including failure to sterilize its products long enough and inadequate testing of its sterilization equipment.

The 2004 report also noted the FDA had notified the state pharmacy board in October 2002 about "a second incident" involving a drug the company had produced, methylprednisolone acetate, which is the same steroid linked to the outbreak.

The report offered no details about the second incident. But the FDA report to Massachusetts in 2002 came three months after New York resident William Koch became sick with bacterial meningitis after receiving an injection of the same steroid, made at NECC. He died as a result in 2004 and NECC later settled a lawsuit in the case.

A timeline of complaints against the company, released Monday among the Department of Public Health documents, showed only an October 2002 complaint involving that particular steroid, and the complaint originated in New York, where Koch lived.

The FDA said it could not give details about what it told the state in October 2002 and referred the AP to public records request forms.

The inspector's report said that a re-inspection of NECC showed it had corrected its problems by 2004. But the inspector cited previous concerns against the agency dating from 1999, and wrote: "It is this investigator's opinion that a formal reprimand should be issued."

Realtor? Good Neighbor Award Winners Strengthen Communities ...

WASHINGTON, DC ? October 24, 2012 ? (RealEstateRama) ? Realtors? work tirelessly to strengthen the communities in which they live and work, as well as improve the lives of their neighbors. For the past 13 years the Good Neighbor Awards program has recognized Realtors? who do just that. The five individuals named as this year?s REALTOR? Magazine Good Neighbor Award winners value service above self and are committed to helping those in need.

The 2012 Good Neighbor Awards winners are Rocco ?Rocky? Balsamo, The Rocky Balsamo Real Estate Group/Long & Foster Real Estate Inc., Princeton Junction, N.J., for cofounding the Center for FaithJustice; Michael Campbell, Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage, Tucson, Ariz., president of The Hearth Foundation; Regina ?Ginger? Dowdle, Sunrise Realty & Development, Statesville, N.C., founder of The Shepherd?s Watch Ministries; Ortrud ?Trudy? Harsh, Long & Foster, Fairfax, Va., founder of The Brain Foundation; and Sally Rudloff, Kane & Associates, Alameda, Calif., former president of the Alameda Boys & Girls Club.

?The Good Neighbor Awards reminds us that a strong community is integral to a person?s quality of life,? said National Association of Realtors? President Moe Veissi, broker-owner of Veissi & Associates Inc., in Miami. ?Realtors? strongly believe in this philosophy and work tirelessly to build successful communities. Despite their busy Realtor? careers, this year?s Good Neighbor Award winners have sacrificed their time, money and effort to improve the quality of life for others. I am honored to recognize them and help them grow their efforts so they can help even more people through their selfless work.?

NAR?s REALTOR? Magazine presents the Good Neighbor Awards, which have been granted annually since 2000. Winners receive a $10,000 grant for their charity and a $2,000 Lowe?s gift card, and are profiled in the November-December issue of REALTOR?? Magazine. The recipients will be presented with crystal trophies on Saturday, November 10, at the 2012 REALTORS? Conference & Expo in Orlando; 21,000 Realtors? and guests are expected to attend the conference.

Balsamo is founding board member and volunteer executive director for Center for FaithJustice, a nonprofit that promotes volunteerism among teens and young adults. CFJ runs summer day camps and sleep-away camps, as well as other year-round workshops for schools and churches. Last year, more than 900 teens volunteered more than 20,000 hours in local charities and spent a similar number of hours in education classes.

Campbell is president of The Hearth Foundation, which provides transitional housing for low-income families, typically women with young children. He is credited for reorganizing and stabilizing the organization, strengthening the board, and creating effective partnerships with other organizations to provide services to the residents. Campbell recently won a $720,000 grant, which will allow the organization to make much-needed renovations to their apartments.

Dowdle and her husband founded The Shepherd?s Watch Ministries, which hosts a summer camp for children in the community, as well as a year-round residential program for at-risk youths in foster care, on their 60-acre farm. The residential program focuses on teens who will likely age out of foster care without being adopted. The goal is to teach these youths much needed skills to help prepare them for independent living. The Dowdles have foster-parented more than 20 youths since 2005, adopting two boys with another adoption in process.

Harsh founded The Brain Foundation in 2003 to address the growing need for affordable housing for mentally ill adults who might otherwise be homeless. The foundation has since purchased six homes that house 24 adults with brain diseases like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or chronic depression. She has formed a successful partnership with another nonprofit to provide residents with services that allow them to live independently. Her model has been copied in Florida and she frequently mentors others who are trying to create similar programs.

Rudloff, former president of the Alameda Boys & Girls Club, is credited with incredible growth that allows the club to expand from serving 1,200 children to a capacity of 3,000. Rudloff led a $10 million capital campaign that built a new 25,000-square-foot youth center. She also launched a dental clinic for uninsured children, recruited math teachers for a new tutoring program, and created partnerships that provide family counseling. In addition to being a Good Neighbor Award winner, Rudloff also won the most votes in an online Web Choice contest, earning her an additional $500 Lowe?s gift card.

In addition to the winners, five Realtors? have been recognized as Good Neighbor Award honorable mentions; they will each receive $2,500 grants and a $1,000 Lowe?s gift card. They are Charlene M. Brennan, Strano & Associates Real Estate, Fairview Heights, Ill., for Rotary District 6510?s Belizean Children?s Program; Georgia L. Butterfield, Legacy Real Estate & Associates, ERA Powered, Fremont, Calif., for Adopt An Angel; Geoffrey W. Lavell, Better Homes & Gardens Real Estate-Desert Properties, Henderson, Nev., for Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation; Patti M. Miller, Tierra Antigua Realty, Sierra Vista, Ariz., for Real Wishes Foundation; and Kathleen Peck, All in One Realty Group, Inc., Naples, Fla., for Lighthouse of Collier, Inc.

REALTOR? Magazine?s Good Neighbor Awards is sponsored by Lowe?s and HouseLogic. Nominees were judged on their personal contribution of time, financial and material contributions to their cause. To be eligible, nominees have to be NAR members in good standing. For more information about the Good Neighbor Awards, visit REALTOR.org/gna.

With fiscal year 2011 sales of $50.2 billion, Lowe?s Companies, Inc. is a FORTUNE? 100 company that serves approximately 15 million customers a week at more than 1,745 home improvement stores in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Lowe?s is a proud partner in NAR?s REALTOR Benefits? Program, bringing Realtors? exclusive benefits to help build relationships with their customers, generate referrals and expand their client base.? FTC helps slow tech support scam; don't give remote computer access

By Robb Hicken/ BBB?s chief storyteller

?Oh, I think I?ve done something horrible,? the female voice spoke quickly and somewhat wavering. ?I think I?ve lost control of my computer, and I don?t know what to do.?

Without stopping, she continued to describe how there was a ?wicked? virus on her home computer and that Microsoft Tech Support had contacted her to say they needed to fix her computer.

When she took a breath, I asked if they were in her computer at this time.

?Why, yes! I don?t want this virus to take over my entire computer,? she says.

In spite of the major efforts to close down the tech support scam, calls continue to plague unsuspecting Snake River Region computer owners.?In the end, the con artists charge hundreds of dollars to remotely access and ?fix? the computers.

After calming her down, explaining the scam, I had her simply unplug the computer, call a trusted computer repair shop, and take no further calls from the phone number.

On Oct. 4,?the Federal Trade Commission cracked a major international tech support scam?in which telemarketers masquerade as major computer companies, con consumers into believing their computers are riddled with viruses, spyware and other malware, and then charge hundreds of dollars to remotely access and ?fix? the consumers? computers.

The FTC charged that the five operations ? mostly based in India ? target English-speaking consumers in the United States, Canada, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand and the U.K. from telemarketing boiler rooms.

Telemarketers claimed affiliation with Dell, Microsoft, McAfee and Norton, and told intended victims malware was detected by the company and needed immediate removal. The scammers direct consumers to a?utility area of their computer?to show that the computer had been infected. ?The scammers charge from $49 to $450 to remove it.? When consumers agreed to pay the fee, the scammers took remote access to the victim?s ?computer to ?remove? non-existent malware and downloaded otherwise free programs.

A sixth company lured computer owners through Google ads that appeared when consumers searched for their computer company?s tech support telephone number.

When in operation, FTC claims, tens of thousands of people were tricked into paying removal fees that are ?standard warnings and errors?generated by software companies, and are not viruses.

Chewing betel quid the fourth most popular psychoactive substance in the world after tobacco, alcohol and caffeine exposes its 600 million users to substances that act as direct carcinogens in the mouth, scientists are reporting in a new study. It appears in ACS' journal Chemical Research in Toxicology.

Mu-Rong Chao and Chiung-Wen Hu explain that betel quid (BQ) consists of nuts from the arcea tree, sometimes combined with spices, such as cardamom or saffron, and other ingredients. Available in commercial forms, BQ is popular among people in China, India and other Asian countries, and people of Asian heritage living in the U.S. and other countries. Scientists have known for decades that chewing BQ can lead to oral cancer, and showed recently that the substances in BQ could be changed into carcinogens in the body. The authors of this study explored whether there were any substances in the arcea nut that can cause cancer directly, without any need for the body to change or "activate" them.

They discovered that compounds in the arcea nut can "alkylate" the genetic material DNA, causing changes that increase the risk of cancer, and they are present in betel quid in amounts high enough to do so. "Our study showed that these alkylating agents are present at levels sufficient to cause DNA damage and could potentially have adverse implications to human health, particularly in the case of the development of oral cancer for BQ chewers," they say.

Hi everyone, it's so nice to "see" you here. I miss you all so much. It's very exciting when I have something to post. There's a rush of excitement for me.

I feel so lucky today! Why? Because we have a guest blogger. When Lani Muelrath found out that I was struggling with keeping up Healthy Girl's Kitchen posting along with my other responsibilities she quickly offered to do a guest post for us. She asked me the type of content that I was looking for, and of course, I asked one thing, "how did you overcome compulsive overeating?"

If you don't know Lani Muelrath from the Plant-based internet world, let me fill you in on her background. Lani is also known as The Plant-Based Fitness Expert (www.lanimuelrath.com), and she specializes in helping people who struggle with weight and energy transform their bodies -and their lives - without going hungry or practicing grueling, excessive exercise. Lani is the author of Fit Quickies: 5 Minute Targeted, Body Shaping Workouts. Lani is the Fitness Adviser for the Dr. John McDougall Health and Medical Center Discussion Boards, as well as a presenter and celebrity coach for the 21-Day PCRM Vegan Kickstart and VegRun Programs and the Complete Health Improvement Project (CHIP). In addition, she is the Health and fitness expert for Vegan Mainstream and Plant-Based Fitness and Healthy Living Examiner at Examiner.com.

Lani has been a Guest Lecturer in Kinesiology at San Francisco State University and is an Associate Professor in Kinesiology at Butte College. She has a Master's degree and several teaching credentials in Physical Education, and holds multiple fitness certifications including Fitness Instructor from the American Council on Exercise, Yoga, and Pilates-based instruction from the PhysicalMind Institute. She is certified in Plant-Based Nutrition through Cornell University and holds a Fitness Nutrition Specialist Advanced Credential from the National Academy of Sports Medicine.

Lani created and starred in her own CBS TV show, "Lani's All-Heart Aerobics." Recipient of the Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Instruction, and regularly speaks and writes about healthy living, plant-based nutrition, and fitness. She overcame her own lifetime struggle with weight over more than 15 years ago when she lost 50 pounds, which she has maintained easily with the tools that she uses to coach others to be successful with in weight loss, body shaping, and health. Multiple resources for you for healthy fitness, weight loss, and plant-based nutrition at lanimuelrath.com.

But back to my question, how did Lani overcome compulsive overeating?

The answers I got did not come as a total surprise (remember, I said total--there is one thing that really has me reeling), but they are a welcome reminder of all that is important to remember on this journey. And boy, do I always need reminding!

So here's how Lani answered my call:

For years I labored under the delusion (I"ll explain) that I was an 'emotional overeater'. I even fessed up to the statement: "I'm a compulsive overeater", hoping for a breakthrough.?

Still, the frustrating and excruciating experience of continuing to eat on an overfilled yet hungry stomach continued and the long term relief from it eluded me. And all the self-exploration and screams of supplication on my knees never made a difference until I got a few things straight.

To boil it down to the bones, the answer was found wrapped in three gifts. These I refer to in my practice as the 3 Pillars. The are a critical trio for healthy success. They are food, fitness, and the most often neglected third door, frame of mind.

In the event that you are up against the wall of compulsive overeating, maybe these lessons from my experience will give you insights and possibly the breakthrough that you are looking for. Even if you, like me, are happy, well-adjusted, have a good job, happy relationships - yet can't seem to get it together in this arena. "What's wrong with me?" you ask.

It's not a character flaw. And guilt just makes it worse (I'll explain that, too).

6 Steps to Ending Compulsive Overeating

Here are six pivotal points that turned my life around when it comes to food, eating, and my body.

1) Eat enough - in time. Don't dismiss this one quickly, even if you think you ARE eating enough and believe the problem is that you are eating too much. If you have a weight problem, it seems self-evident, doesn't it? That's how it seemed to me. Once I even put an overweight picture of myself on the refrigerator as visual proof to myself that "see, there's plenty of fuel on your body!" to help me through a fast to - you guessed it, lose weight. The idea was to discourage me from eating. Perhaps you've done something similar.

This set me on a mission to continually cut back, delay eating, or otherwise under eat. This is the worst thing I could have done to lose weight. Hunger presents a primary stress to your body. It threatens your very survival instinct, for nothing is as basic to our survival as getting the fuel needed to think, move, and be.

Let's say another stressor enters your day - you think? The toast burns, the traffic makes you late for work, you have a verbal scrimmage with your SO, the car runs low on gas and where is that gas station anyway?

Which of these stressors is 1) the easiest to relieve, and 2) the one your body will prioritize as needing relief? You guessed it. Satisfying the hunger. And instead of seeing the wisdom of our bodies, we blame ourselves for being weak, compulsive, 'emotional' overeaters.

Action item: Eat to satisfaction early in the day and watch the night munchies evaporate.

2) Eat a whole foods, low fat plant-based diet. This has to do with hunger satisfaction and satiety. Your body is designed to respond with appropriate fullness signals when presented with food it was designed to thrive on, and that means full of fiber and low on fat and as close as possible to how it was delivered in nature. Some people need to be more prudent about this than others - you need to discover your own niche for getting to your goals.

Action item: Edge out lower quality food with high fiber, low fat plant foods: vegetables, starchy vegetables, whole grains, beans, fruit.

3) Move your body. This means also not sitting too much. Not only because it burns calories, which it does, or because exercise shapes muscle, which it does. Activity also restores equilibrium and willpower, giving you more resources for sticking to your plant. See 5 minute willpower workout #1: Exercise, the closest thing to a willpower magic bullet.

Action item: Find small chunks of time throughout the day to move your body. Even if you are getting in your workouts, be mindful of the power even 2 - 5 minutes of moving your muscles to restore well-being and inner strength.

4) Meditate. Breathe and be. Cultivate some kind of practice or quiet time that has the simple objective of restoring mental and emotional equilibrium. This is huge with mindset mastery, and the one most often neglected leg of the 3 Pillars.

Action item: See 5 minute anti-anxiety paint and willpower workout: How to meditate in 5 simple steps.

5) Abstain from negative self-talk. Look back to #1 above, where I gave the example of a fat photo on the fridge. Somehow this was supposed to shame me into avoiding food - and it did, until I couldn't take it any more and it backfired in a binge. But what kind of a message is this to send yourself anyway? You cannot hate yourself to a better figure. And if you've been using the tight belt trick or the fat photo strategy yourself, something is going to need to shift out of the negative for you to be successful.

Action item: This one has many layers, but for starters, begin by making note of every time negative self-talk hijacks your inner world. Every time. It starts with awareness. From there, create positive alternatives to the negative messages.

6) Give up the guilt. Indulgence in feeling bad about 'breaking' your healthy eating plans compounds stress, driving us straight into the stress-relieving properties of - you guessed it - breaking your healthy eating plans with pleasure-promising foods. Ironic!

Action item: Instead, allow wiggle room for less-than-perfect.

I believe in the 3 Pillars so firmly, they are the heart of my book. Fit Quickies: 5 Minute Targeted Body Shaping Workouts sounds like a fitness book - and it is, but it is truly a?Trojan?horse of healthy success. For inside that horse is solid attention to practices of eating, activity, and mastery of mindset for success.

Once I got the 3 Pillars in place, things changed radically for me when it comes to food, eating, and my body. So much so that I haven't had a binge since 1996. And I lost 50 lbs for good. Have I sometimes had too much to eat? Maybe more mousse pie than I really needed? Certainly - that is normal. In contrast, random acts of overeating beyond fullness, repeatedly, is disturbed eating.

The good news is there is a way out. I've done it and have seen it done over and over again. Once you see the interconnectedness of eating, moving, and thinking, you can take action for change.

Was anything on Lani's list a surprise to you? What was it?

Personally, what kind of has me thinking was #1--Eat Enough--in time. I have spent so many years trying to eat less and feeling like such a pig in the process. Like right now, as I type this, I am feeling really hungry. There is a big empty pit feeling in my stomach. What would happen if I filled it, like, now? It's not time for a meal. Would filling that pit now help me to not overeat at night?

I don't know, but I'm certainly going to try it.

Thanks Lani!

Why Won't My Ex Talk To Me? - The Truth

Why Won\'t My Ex Talk To Me? - The Truth

Maybe you tried to start a conversation too soon, or maybe you simply tried to open the lines of communication too much. Regardless of the method that got you to this point, you're currently at a standstill. Your ex just isn't responding the way you'd like - or at all. The good news is that there are certainly ways to overcome even this kind of challenge to win your ex back and get your relationship back on track. The bad news is that it's going to take some time, some patience and some dedication along the way in order to accomplish your goals - but hardship is no cause to give up and call it quits.

Take a second to think back to a different breakup you went through. Even if you were the one that called it off, there were some significant emotions that came along with ending a relationship that you had been invested in. Your ex is going through the same thing right now. Understanding that can be the key to your overall success to win back their heart as long as you choose your path carefully and don't fall victim to impulse that can limit your opportunities to communicate in the future.

Acting with Dignity and Choosing Wisely:

It may be easier to just go with your instincts and allow the emotional side of the breakup to take over. In order to increase your chances for success, however, you need to put your impulses aside and try to examine the situation rationally. Finding the balance between the emotional and rational side may be easier said than done, but it is absolutely vital that you keep your emotions in check and continue to act in a way that doesn't diminish your self-respect in your own eyes - and in the eyes of your ex. Using the following guidelines for behavior that can move your forward as well as things that should be avoided can help you through the initial stages and get you to the point where communication can be reestablished beneficially.

- Don't Continue the Pursuit:

You may have a lot of unanswered questions for your ex that you legitimately deserve answers to, but now is not the time to pursue that line of thought. All that pursing them will accomplish is pushing them even further away from contact with you and is counter-productive to what you hope to accomplish. While your questions may be valid, your timing isn't - just be patient and believe that you'll be able to talk to them about the situation later on down the road.

- Don't fall into the trap of Self-Pity:

Being dumped automatically creates negative feelings and can easily progress into a downward spiral. Keep in mind, however, that the sooner you can overcome the wealth of negative emotions, the sooner you can begin the process of trying to reconnect with your ex. Instead of allowing your doubt to overwhelm you, choose to use this time to focus on your positive characteristics and keep your eye on the prize - a renewed relationship with your ex that has the potential to last.

- Enjoy some social input:

It may seem harder than normal to put yourself out there, but it's a definitive and important process towards recovery. Your social network is not only a built-in support network to help get you through these difficult times, but you want to make sure that you're creating a positive image that will get through to your ex. If your ex sees you out and about instead of sitting on the couch throwing a pity party, they're going to wonder what your secret is. Maybe they'll think you've moved on or found someone new. No matter what they think, you're on their mind - and that's an important piece of the puzzle to eventually communicating and winning back their heart.

- Think about the past productively:

You don't want to wallow in the past, but you do want to think about the process of when you and your ex first got together. What caused them to notice you out of all the potential people they could be with? What were you like when you first got together? It's possible to revamp your image and become the person that they initially fell for again. Not only can it help you feel better about yourself, it will make your ex remember the way things used to be as well. That fact goes a long way in reestablishing communication and getting the ball rolling in the right direction again.

Why They Seem to be Giving You the Cold Shoulder:

If your ex just isn't responding to any of your phone calls or messages, it's usually for one of two possible causes. Either you didn't wait long enough after the breakup to make initial contact, or you've gone overboard and contacted them too much. They're not going to realize that they made a potential mistake in leaving you if they don't have the chance to miss you first - and that simply won't happen until you give them some space to breathe. Not only does the distance work in your favor, but it also allows you some valuable time to come to terms with the situation on your own and make a plan going forward.

Going into the situation blind isn't going to do you any favors. You certainly need to have a plan in place that requires more than one step towards your end goal. Along the way, it's important to pay attention to the reaction you're getting, and that means that you have to be willing to put yourself in your ex's shoes. Understanding their thought process can be critical to your success, and there are many different avenues to explore. Overall, your plan is going to reunite you and your ex as long as you're willing to put in the effort and be patient. All of your hard work is going to pay off if you play your cards right.

What To Do Next

Being dumped can come as a massive shock, especially if your ex is no longer talking to you. If you acquire the right knowledge then your chances of winning back your ex will be vastly improved.

Small Vendor Calling it Quits as CTA Changes Concession Leases

By chicago-pipeline at October 24, 2012 | 4:23 pm | Print

WICKER PARK ? At the end of the month Dashrathlal Patel will vacate the tiny, 80-square-foot concession stand at the Damen Blue Line El stop (1588 N. Damen Ave.) where he has worked six days a week for the last six years, to make room for a new tenant who will pay more rent to the CTA.

Patel told DNAinfo Chicago he purchased his concession stand from a prior owner after seeing a newspaper ad. He said he has to give it up, but does not yet have plans for the future.

Patel has stocked his stand based on customer feedback. By 9 a.m. on a recent rainy morning, he?d already sold three umbrellas. Over the past few months, he began selling mini deodorants and five-hour energy drinks.

?I know what things to buy, what my customers want,? he said.

Patel told DNAinfo Chicago a shoe repair shop will be moving into his space. He said the owner of that business offered to pay $1,200 monthly rent to the CTA. For the past few years, Patel has paid $500 a month.

?I offered to give more money [in rent] but they wouldn?t say how much they wanted. Rent will go to the highest bidder. I asked to be part of that bid and submitted mine,? he said.

Patel estimated his stand has generated $200 to $250 in daily sales.

In addition to Patel?s spot at Damen, five other vendor spaces inside CTA stations, including a 199-square-foot space at the nearby California Blue Line stop, are listed as available for rent on the Jones Lang LaSalle website.? In August 2008, the real estate company began an exclusive five-year consulting deal with the city to handle leasing for CTA spaces, according to a report in REjournals.com.

Brian Carroll, from Jones Lang LaSalle?s Public Institute Sales Department, declined to comment on new tenants at the Damen stop, but said the bidding process is still open.

?Essentially what has happened is the CTA is putting out spaces they have on month-to-month leases for bid, to get longer-term leases. I?ve spoken with [Patel] several times to get him to bid. In terms of the shoe repair, it was a misunderstanding to say the least. We are not closing the bidding process until Nov. 5 and then the CTA will award the space,? Carroll said.

Carroll would not say how many bids have been submitted thus far, but said that the process would wrap up Nov. 5 for all of the CTA assets listed on the Jones Lang LaSalle site. Carroll added that selecting a tenant is not just a ?financially driven? decision.

?We don?t just award [the space] to who gives us the most money. CTA is a public transit organization and they consider five components in the application process, like business experience. How does your use serve ridership? What?s your community involvement?? he said.

The CTA board meets the second Wednesday of every month. Carroll could not provide a timeline of when the space will be re-leased and could not confirm whether the CTA board would evaluate bids at November?s meeting.

The second Wednesday is Nov. 14. Patel?s two-year city business license expires Nov. 15 and he said he decided not to renew his two licenses, which cost $910.

Meanwhile, if anyone is in the market for a soda cooler, Patel said he would be selling his, as-is, along with all of his fixtures, beginning next week.
