It's barely six months since we reviewed the DS211+, which is one of the fastest and most feature-laden NAS enclosures we've ever reviewed. Yet Synology has already released its successor, the DS212+, which yet again features a beefed-up specification and numerous other gubbins. While owners of the former will likely be a bit miffed, we have to commend Synology on its relentless upgrade schedule, which allows it to keep up with and very often stay one step ahead of the competition.

These upgrades are rarely pointless either and are in fact useful. Whether or not bit-tech is the reason for some of these upgrades we're not entirely sure, but one of our requests to Synology over a very early pre-Christmas dinner several months ago was that USB 3 should be included in the DS212 range of products. Sure enough, when the DS212+ landed in our lab recently, we were pleased to see two shiny new blue USB 3 ports at the rear of the unit. That's not all that's new with the DS212+ though.

The DS212+ has received a speed boost in the CPU department, taking the 1.6GHz Marvell Kirkwood CPU of the DS211+ and adding another 400MHz on top to give a nice round 2GHz. The DS211+ was no slouch when it came to dishing out data, but the additional speed should further justify the hefty price premium these powerful high-end NAS enclosures demand. You can see if this made a difference in our performance testing.

According to Synology, the DS212+ also sports slightly reduced load and hibernation power consumption, the former down from 24W with the DS211+ to 18.7W with the newer model - in percentage terms, a sizable drop, which further adds to the argument that a NAS is the way to go if you're concerned about power consumption.

The rest of the specification is pretty much identical, though. There's the same 92mm fan, which made a huge difference with the DS211+ compared to previous models in terms of cooling and noise. The black plastic exterior is the same, as is the push-fit, anti-vibration drive bay cover, while the hot-swappable drive cages feature the same anti-vibration mounts, similar to those you'd find in a 3.5in drive bay in a decent PC case. The latter, in operation, do seem to cut down on noise and vibration - the DS212+, like the DS211+ is the best NAS enclosure we've come across in this regard, however, all NAS enclosures we've come across do exhibit a certain amount of 'rattle' when the hard disk is being accessed and the DS212+ is no exception.

In addition to two USB 3 ports at the rear of the unit, there's an eSATA port here too and a further USB 2 port on the front panel along with an SD card slot - great if your digital camera uses them but thankfully the USB ports also support memory card readers in conjunction with the very handy copy button on the front panel, which allows you to dump your latest photo session straight onto the NAS without needing to use your PC.

As well as regularly updated units hitting the shelves, Synology also releases new versions of its DSM operating system regularly, which can and do add new features, improvements and speed boosts. One of the great things about it is that a vast majority of features are available on all its NAS boxes, with more expensive models simply offering beefier specifications or more drive bays.

The DSM 3.2-1958 version we used sports Synology's familiar OS-style multitasking interface, which, while it isn't as flashy and simple-looking as that found on QNAP's models, is very intuitive, lag-free and un-cluttered, with help, either via a search box or links to help sections of its website, never far away if you get stuck.

If you've read previous reviews of Synology's products, you'll know just how well-featured they are. Whether you need to store and share photos, music, videos or data, there's a plethora of tools at your disposal. There's DLNA/UPnP support for easy streaming to consoles and compatible TVs, although this wasn't enabled by default, instead requiring a couple of clicks in the UI to configure things such as the menu style, then activating the DLNA/UPnP media server itself. This worked well on our WDTV live for example, and you're also able to tweak settings such as thumbnail quality if things are getting a bit laggy on the other end and create or re-index folders that are indexed.

If you're in need of Squeezebox support, this isn't supported out of the box as far as we could see, but you can download a 'package' via Synology's website that should get you up and running. For general music, video and photo sharing, folders are created automatically and can be found under 'Diskstation' in your network, meaning that creating a basic media library shouldn't take very long at all, and there's plenty of customisation along the way. If you need to create shared folders, they'll appear here too, and you have the option of setting access rules for groups and users for each shared folder you create.

With a maximum of two hard disks available, the DS212+ supports RAID 0, RAID 1, and JBOD with the option to select either in the storage manager when you're creating your volumes for the first time. This is also the place to setup iSCSI, which can be useful for certain programs such as Windows Media Center which can have problems using shared folders/mapped network drives rather than local drives.

PARKER: Obama and Santorum want the same thing in GOP primary

Let me be blunt: If Republicans nominate Rick Santorum, they will lose.

The prospect of four more years of Barack Obama holds some appeal for many Americans, but probably not for most Republicans. It may give doubters among them some comfort, however, to know that Obama and Santorum share the same prayer: that Santorum be the Republican nominee.

It gives me no pleasure to rap Santorum, a man I know and respect even if I disagree with him on some issues. Not that he minds. He?s a scrapper who loves a fight ? and he forgives. Bottom line: Santorum is a good man. He?s just a good man in the wrong century.

This doesn?t necessarily mean he?s wrong about everything, but he?s so far out of step with the majority of Americans that he can?t hope to win the votes of moderates and independents so crucial to victory in November. The Republican Party?s insistence on conservative purity, meanwhile, will result in the cold comfort of defeat with honor and, in the longer term, potential extinction.

Increasingly, the party is growing grayer and whiter. Nine out of 10 Republicans are non-Hispanic white and more than half are highly religious, according to Gallup. This isn?t news, but when this demographic is suddenly associated with renewed debate about whether women should have access to contraception ? never mind abortion ? suddenly they begin to look like the Republican Brotherhood.

Add to that perception the abhorrent, pre-abortion ultrasound legislation proposed in Virginia, and you can kiss the pope?s ring and voters? retreating backsides.

The proposed law, temporarily tabled, called for women seeking an abortion to be forced to submit to a vaginal ultrasound. Aldous Huxley?s ?The Devils of Loudon? comes to mind, but he was writing about exorcisms in a convent of 17th-century France. When did Republicans, who supposedly believe in less government intervention, begin thinking that invading a person?s body against her will was remotely acceptable?

Saner minds have prevailed, at least for now, but the fact that the bill was ever conceived and taken seriously by at least some number of legislators gives freedom-loving voters every reason to run the other way.

Informed consent is, in my view, a reasonable goal. Surely removal of a human fetus deserves the same level of awareness we would insist upon in removing, say, a gall bladder. If some women change their minds after viewing the contents of their womb, then they obviously needed more information than they had going in. Still, any procedure should be voluntary, and inserting a probe into a woman against her will is rape by any other name.

Obviously, this is no place for the state.

The Virginia bill and the broader (bogus) message often repeated on left-leaning talk shows that Republicans are campaigning against birth control have created a perfect storm for defeat. The math is clear: Sixty-seven percent of women are either Democrats (41 percent) or independents (26 percent); more women than men vote; 55 percent of women ages 18-22 voted in the 2008 presidential election.

Republicans are caught in a nearly impossible situation, none more than the more temperate-minded Mitt Romney. It is important to remember, however, why contraception came up in the first place. Republicans were forced to man their battlements by the Obama administration?s new health care rule mandating that Catholic organizations pay for contraception in violation of conscience. From there, things spiraled out of the realm of religious liberty, where this debate belongs, and into the fray of moral differences.

Santorum?s original surge was based not on social issues but on his authenticity and his ability to identify with middle-class struggles. He was the un-Romney. But now this appealing profile has been occluded by social positions that make him an outlier to mainstream Americans.

Republicans may sleep better if they nominate The Most Conservative Person In The World, but they won?t be seeing the executive branch anytime soon. It?s too bad this election season got lost in the weeds of religious conviction. It wouldn?t have happened if the Obama administration had simply taken one of several other routes available for providing birth control to women who want it. Instead, Obama aimed right at the heart of the Republican Party and, one can only assume, got exactly what he wanted: a culture war in which Rick Santorum would be the natural point man and, in the broader public?s perception, the voice of the GOP.

Rome nightclub owner charged with assault

A woman has accused a Spartanburg nightclub owner of assault.

The Spartanburg Public Safety Department has charged Joe Larry Wells Jr., 52, owner of Rome nightclub in downtown Spartanburg, with third-degree assault and battery for an incident that allegedly occurred Feb. 18 at his business, which also is listed as his residence, according to online jail records.

The woman told a police officer that Wells offered to give her a tour of the nightclub. She said she was led to the basement where Wells told her he had been watching her and thought she was sexy and asked to kiss her, according to an incident report.

The 23-year-old woman said she told Wells ?no,? but he kissed her on the cheek after she turned her head to avoid the kiss, according to the report. The woman told an officer she was frightened after the incident and wanted to leave the nightclub, according to the report. She claims she was told she could not leave, and that her purse was placed beneath the counter and not in the coat room, according to the incident report. The victim was later able to leave the nightclub and stated security personnel followed her to the parking lot. The victim told an officer she ran to a friend?s car and hid underneath, according to the report.

An officer spoke with the victim at City Hall where a written statement was made.

Wells was booked into the Spartanburg County Detention Facility a little after 7 p.m. Friday. He had not appeared before a judge as of 9:10 p.m.

The penalty for third-degree assault is a fine of not more than $500 or imprisonment for not more than 30 days, or both, according to a written statement from the Spartanburg Public Safety Department.

In legislatures and courtrooms, busy weeks ahead for voter ID

In an election year dominated by battles over health care mandates, tax rates, and rising gasoline prices, it?s the mechanics of voting ? and who?ll get to vote in November ? that?s getting full-time attention from state legislators, election lawyers, and judges.

In the latest example, the Virginia state Senate is headed for a vote Friday on a new voter identification requirement ? one more indication that the voter ID controversy will keep boiling in legislatures and in the courts right up to Election Day.

These new voter ID laws are being proposed almost exclusively by Republican legislators and governors in states throughout the nation, spawning both litigation and angry rhetoric from Democrats.

?All of a sudden after the 2008 election, these (voter ID laws) miraculously appear,? said Rep. Frederica Wilson, D- Fla. at a recent anti-voter ID event at the Capitol. ?Why? Because we have a black president in the White House and it is to stop all of the people of color from ? coming out to vote, because they (the proponents of voter ID laws) know who they are targeting ?"

Here?s the status of some recently enacted voter ID laws and states where such laws might be considered this year:

Enacted but blocked
South Carolina: Last December, the Justice Department denied approval of the state?s voter ID law requiring voters to present photo identification that Gov. Nikki Haley had signed in May. Under Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act, South Carolina is one of nine states that must seek approval, or ?pre-clearance,? from the Justice Department or a federal court in Washington, D.C., in order to make any change in voting procedure.

State Attorney General Alan Wilson brought suit in federal court, arguing that the requirements ?are at most a temporary inconvenience? to some voters. The state contended that its law was nearly identical to one enacted by Indiana and upheld by the Supreme Court in 2008. Therefore barring South Carolina from doing what Indiana had done would ?raise serious constitutional concerns? about whether Section 5 ?violates South Carolina?s right to equal sovereignty.?

In a separate but related case with big implications for voter ID laws, Shelby County, Ala., is fighting in the federal appeals court in Washington to have Section 5 of VRA struck down as unconstitutional. The appeals court heard oral arguments on Jan. 19 and a ruling is likely in the next several weeks. ?The Shelby County case will likely end up before the Supreme Court and if the justices were to strike down Section 5, the Justice Department would no longer be able to pre-emptively block changes in voting laws.? The department would still be able to use another Section of the VRA to challenge voting laws that have a racially discriminatory impact.

Texas: State Attorney General Greg Abbott filed a suit last month in federal court, asking that Texas be permitted this year to use the photo ID law Gov. Rick Perry signed last spring.

Under Section 5 of the VRA, the Justice Department is now considering Texas?s law, having asked for additional information from the state on the race and ethnicity of Texas voters and drivers. The department must give its response to the Texas law by March 12.

In his filing, Abbott said Texas did not have the racial and ethnic data the Justice Department wanted. ?Indeed, the very reason Texas refuses to maintain racial and ethnic data on its list of registered voters is to facilitate a colorblind electoral process,? he said.

Even in the unlikely event the Justice Department were to approve the Texas law, opponents of the law contend that there would be problems implementing it.

?The state is not ready to allow citizens the ability to obtain this kind of voter ID,? said Rep. Charlie Gonzales, D- Texas. ?It goes way beyond just going to the Department of Public Safety and standing in line. You still have to have your birth certificate; if you?re divorced and your name is different you have to get a certified copy of your divorce decree. There are so many hoops to jump through.?

Enacted but may be blocked
Laws similar to those in South Carolina and Texas have passed in several states and are likely to be opposed by the Justice Department over the same concerns.

Alabama:? Another Section 5 state, Alabama passed a voter ID law which doesn?t take effect until 2014.

Mississippi:? Voters last November approved a ballot initiative to create a photo ID requirement. But the legislature must provide funding to implement the law and the state must receive Justice Department approval since Mississippi is a Section 5 state.

Wisconsin: On Tuesday Wisconsin conducted its first elections under the voter ID law that Republican Gov. Scott Walker signed last year.? Wisconsin is not covered by Section 5 of the VRA but challenges have already been launched. On Thursday civil rights groups and a labor union coalition filed a suit against the law arguing that it discriminates against black and Latino voters. The American Civil Liberties Union has also filed a suit seeking to block enforcement of the law. One argument ACLU makes is that the cost of obtaining a copy of a birth certificate ($20 in Wisconsin, more in other states) in order to get a state ID card would be ?a severe financial burden? for some people, a burden that violates the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.

The voting in municipal and county primary elections in Wisconsin went smoothly, according to the Associated Press. Walker commented on his Twitter account: ?1st election w/photo ID required & it seems to have run well. Proof that common sense still works.?

But Rep. Gwen Moore, D- Wisc., a longtime political foe of Walker, alleges the governor "clearly has had a goal?for many,?many years to?disenfranchise people of color."

She also contended that the law would hurt President Barack Obama?s chances to win the state in November, adding, ?This is strictly designed to disenfranchise people who would otherwise vote for Democrats."

Asked to comment on Moore?s remarks, Walker?s spokesman Cullen Werwie said, ?Requiring photo identification to vote is common sense ? we require it to get a library card, cold medicine, and public assistance.? Gov. Walker will continue to implement common sense reforms that protect the electoral process and increases citizens? confidence in the results of our elections.??

May be enacted this year
Virginia:? The state Senate is likely to vote Friday on a bill that would require a voter to present some form of identification but would allow him or her to use an employee identification card containing a photograph of the voter, or a copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, or paycheck that shows the name and address of the voter. As a VRA Section 5-covered state, Virginia would need to gets its law cleared by the Justice Department.

Pennsylvania:? The Pennsylvania House passed a voter ID bill last year. Both Republican and Democratic sources say that there will be a renewed push for voter ID to pass in the state Senate, where the GOP has a 30 to 20 majority, and to be sent on to Republican Gov. Tom Corbett for his signature in the next couple of months. Corbett has said he supports a voter ID law.

Minnesota: A Minnesota state senate committee has approved a proposed amendment to the state constitution to require photo ID for voting, but it has yet to be approved by the full state senate and the state House. Recently enacted
Rhode Island, Tennessee, and Kansas all enacted photo ID laws last year. None has yet been enjoined or struck down.? None of those states are covered by Section 5 of the VRA.

Iowa: The state?s Republican Secretary of State Matt Schultz has proposed a photo identification law but state Senate Majority Leader Mike Gronstal opposes the idea.

Ohio: The Ohio House passed a photo ID bill last year but the Senate didn?t act on it. The prospects do not look good for passing a bill this year, said Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted, a Republican.

He said the photo ID bill last year ?polarized people over the whole concept of election reform and modernization. World News - Former 'Amazing Race' producer Jeff Rice found dead ...

An American television?producer?has been found dead in mysterious circumstances while working in Uganda, his brother-in-law told msnbc.com on Wednesday.

Paul Blackman said that family members had heard that poisoning was suspected in the death of father of two Jeff Rice, 39, who is originally from Oklahoma.

Blackman, who is the brother of Rice's wife Sally, added that the situation was unclear and?relatives were trying to establish what exactly had happened

Rice, who previously worked for?shows including?"The Amazing Race" and Animal Planet's "Whale Wars,"?died on Friday night.?

Rice's assistant, who Blackman declined to name, also became ill and was taken to a hospital in Uganda.

"We've sent people up there to get some answers," Blackman told msnbc.com by phone from Durban, South Africa. "Nothing is finalized yet.

Addressing media reports that Rice had been fatally poisoned, Blackman said:?"I don't know where they are getting this 'definitely poisoned' thing."

Rice?moved to South Africa about 13 years ago and?holds dual citizenship, Blackman said. His wife is South African.

Rice's death was first reported by FoxNews.com.

'Really tough to handle'
Blackman said Wednesday morning that he was looking after their children, girls aged seven and two,?while Sally Blackman tried to get information from the South African police.

He said?his sister was finding the?uncertainty "really tough to handle, but, yeah, she's strong."

"There's so much stuff in the air about possible poisoning, all that kind of stuff," Blackman said. "At the moment, we're trying to get Jeff's body out of there to get some answers."

Blackman said Rice had been "a historian, tour guide kind of person" in the United States and?had started?to work?in television about three years ago. He and his wife ran SB Productions in Durban.

He added his brother-in-law was working on?either a future show or documentary in Uganda.

"He was a fantastic producer apparently, a very, very sought-after producer," he said. "The messages (of condolence) coming in have been very, very good actually. It's been fantastic, he's a very well-liked character. He was a good guy, very relaxed and just a very good guy."

The "about us" section of SB Productions' website says Rice decided there were "better ways to spend his time" after five years "contributing to the stalemate of the 405 in LA."

"From pie in the sky to looking no futher than his nose, his mind is always churning. If Jeff isn't crunching budgets or breaking down scripts, he can probably be found in some unusual African location with his Power Book and a bottle of the local brew. Jeff has an incredibly calm nature and a wicked sense of humor," it adds.
